Anyone heard or seen any sign of a high res 17.3 inch display coming in the next months?

So many laptops are getting the hi res treatment. Up to 3200x1800 in some which is awesome. Now I know it's overkill etc etc and this thread is not a discussion for people to bash on the necessities of so called "retina displays". I'm just asking, because my research has turned up squat, whether anyone has heard rumours of any upcoming 17.3 inch laptops or plain 17.3 inch LCDs with a beyond 1080p resolution.

    Thanks!

Nothing yet on my side, I've heard that the M6800 will stay at 1920x0180 which isn't a good sign if you as me, but it is still a rumor at this point.

I haven't seen anything about it but its certainly possible. Surprising that it isn't out yet considering Apple's "retina" display goes way over 1920x1080 on 13" and 15" screens, should be a piece of cake to do on a 17" panel

First, how did you achieve 4.3GHz on your CPU? And second, pixels without quality don't mean much. Recall a few years back when the camera industry was in the same position. How do you get camera A to outsell camera B? Answer: cram more pixels into it so it can outnumber the competition.

Sadly, that does not alone make for a better picture. To be blunt, the industry is at a stand still as far as innovation right now. Sure, new models are coming out, but they're scantly more than the current models now on sale now.

Why? Because nothing really new or innovative has been introduced as of late. And when that happens what does the industry do? It reverts to the numbers wars. And in this case, by increasing the display pixel count.

Sad part is, that's no assurance of quality. In my view, there's so much more they can do to really improve the display. For example, switching to AMOLEDs or IGZO for thinner, lighter and even more energy efficient displays. Or a decrease in the amount of backlight bleed.

Even better, ll that and a chassis with a cartridge display to accompany it. That would finally make the choice of displays an non issue in notebooks as it is in desktops now. Since you could then upgrade as you see fit and as easily as you now do your HDD to an SSD! That's when its truly time to buy.

In this go-round though, the only industry of any interest in the GPU and Nvidia. And that's only because they were able to double their card's storage capacity within the same power envelope. Not that's the kind of change worthy of notice.

Eventually we may see AMOLED and/or other techs take over LCD but for now about all we can hope for is IPS in laptop formats. We will probably see even higher pixel densities then as well. For now 2560x1440 would be very nice though...............

Not something for this thread but just quickly, the Alienware laptops have OC abilities in the bios coupled with a small tweak with Intel XTU and also the latest version of Throttlestop. My highest OC without added voltage is 43/43/44/45 with 4.5Ghz on a single core.

Hopefully we will see some more higher res panels when AMD and Nvidia release their next gen GPU's next year, but we shall see what happens.

I don't think the cards are the weak link here. Especially since current cards already support those resolutions. From what I've been able to gather, its good old fashioned cost that's holding things back.

There's just not enough of a market for manufactures to invest any further. Apple, being an innovation leader (coupled with their legions of bots), went out on a limb and it payed off.

I suppose I'm thinking more about 4k displays. Those are an even higher step up and as of right now need dual titans in SLI to game on.

For gaming yes. However, even now the upgraded Q cards are out with double the GB impact (in one card) than before.
