Can it use regular desktop RAM, or do I need a specific type? If so, what kind? My current RAM type is listed in my sig (PC4200, i don't know how many mhz that is)
Is any particular brand better or more reliable than another?
Are 2gb sticks still too expensive to be worth considering?

No, desktop sticks are completely different, both in size and type. You need notebook RAM, and only the type your motherboad will support, which may only be 4200. Corsair, Kingston, any name brand is fine. Just get the cheapest name brand. 2 GB sticks are still at least 1,500 for ddr2, so probabaly slightly out of your budget lol. Sorry.

Kingston, Corsair and Crucial are all reputable manufacturers of notebook memory. I would go with any of them.

If I have want two sticks, should they both be the same brand?

With name brand memory, which means good memory, it really doesnt matter. At least, I dont see why it should. I suppose since I cant really prove that, Ill just recommend you get matching sticks if you can.
Anyone recommend 1gb stick RAM for an Asus z81sp
