I see SATA II SSDs flooding the local For sale sites now and the pricing looks far more attactive. i was going to sell my m17x r3 but cant find a better machine suited to my needs so I figure I may as well keep it and upgrade the std HHD. would I be stupid to spend on SATA II? Im pretty sure the r3 is SataIII ..

Just go SSD. Use your current drive as a second drive with all your data. :D

the m17x r3 is sata III. If you want an attractively priced sata III drive, why not try the 128gb/256gb crucial c300? Its well below 2$/gb. Even the c400/m4, they are also priced very well.

I just don't see the point in putting a 6 cylinder into a ferrari chassis. But then again, an ssd will an enormous upgrade over an hdd, so the difference won't even be that significant

I upgraded from an intel 320 to a 510. Didn't upgrade because the 320 was slow but because I came up on a good deal that was pretty much a straight swap.

And yes I definitely can tell a huge difference! But of course it's all in my head and not really on usage. Both drives are equally fast and I cannot tell which is faster other than by the benchmark numbers.

The upgrade from a traditional hdd to ssd will be much more noticeable than changing from Sata II ssd to Sata III ssd.
