hi guys im from singapore and i currently have a acer travelmate 4000 series(forgot the **** model number) at this specs
pentium m 1.6(dothan)
512 ddr ram
cd-rw/dvd combo drive
Ati radeon 9700 64mb ddr ram
60 gb hd (4200)rpm
15.4 matte screen
i knows its a pretty crappy config but bear in mind i got it 18 months ago. i recently got a job selling laptops and with all the dual cores and ati x1600 i see everyday i feel a bit sad. lol. but what i wanna know is what i can do to boost my performance by a fair bit. i enquired acer about upgrading to a dvd burner drive but it costs around s$299(around $185 US) and i feel its not worth it. an external one here costs s$129 so i think im getting that. also i thinking of upgrading to 1gb ram but i have two sticks of 256 so it would cost me s$199 min to upgrade to one gig. is that a big difference in terms of gaming?
i can play battlefield 2 at low/medium settings and fear at ultra low settings with a bit lag. lol. the hard disk is okay for me at the moment. thanks guys!

Maybe you can upgrade your memory (RAM). I don't know how much your motherboard supports, which memory exactly you are using, how many memory slots your motherboard has etc.
-
there are 2 slots and both are occupied with 256 ram each. thinking of just getting a 512 to replace one 256 but will i see a significant difference with 768 ram?

memory works better if both modules are the same size. So two 512mb sticks would be a lot better than one 512mb and one 256mb stick.
-
A 5400 HD would improve overall performance. How is your matte screen, mine was terrible for DVDs had to exchange it?
-
Like others have said upgrading the RAM, HD, and CD Burner, theres not much more that can be done.
In some cases, when adding up the expense of an upgrade, the upgrade is not worth it, especially if you are within a few hundred dollars of a new system. -
I just upgraded the ram in my notebook with two 512mb modules for around $150 this is supposed to make the system more stable and launch programs faster-it has done both for me. A hard drive upgrade would be a good option also. However between memory and hd you could easily spend around $500 Also I recently upgraded my wireless to .g for $30 which was a nice upgrade.

i see guys thanks for your suggestions. my screen is some lousy matte screen. not really good for watching dvds etc. but changing the screen is not an option as it costs way too much.

The hard drive will give you the biggest boost.
Anything i can do to upgrade my laptop?
