I am trying to let a little steam off my system...it's been hot, and I have already decided to clean everything up and use Arctic silver on the heatsink. I have cleaned everything out, and sent the dust bunnies packing. I'm stuck on this now... If anyone has done this before, please read on and let me know how to proceed.
I have a winbook notebook, an X4. It has a P4. The heatsink was simple to remove, however, everything I am seeing on the application of this Arctic silver 5 is showing something I don't have. There is nothing sticking on top of my CPU, and the Arctic silver instructions reference 2 methods.
From the bottom, I have the processor, that has the "slug" or big square on top facing up. The heatsink sits right on top of that. Now, in between the copper and the face of the slug is a silver thin metal. It is glued on the copper. Nothing between it and the processor. The glue holding it on the copper is like clay. It's not too stiff at all, and the silver thing (maybe a heat spreader) can be pulled off easily.
Do I remove the silver thing, and replace the glue or paste or clay that was there with the Arctic silver? Or do I put this stuff right on the slug? Do I put it on both places? Do I leave the silver thing on in either case?
Quite confused over here. Help would really be appreciated.

Are you able to post a picture, that might help. The clay sounds like the goop used at the factory to bond the CPU and heatsink.

I will have to wait to paste a photo. I put it all back together to see if anyone could help! The cpu is NOT glued to anything. Everything was quite free and easily removeable. I did see a toshiba that was glued together - the cpu and heatsink. Mine is not like that. The heatsink lifts off quite nicely.
When I tear this back down, where do I post a photo? I do have a webshots account if that will work.
Thanks,

Sure, just post a link here to the photo.
