So I'm planning to buy one of the listed above laptops, and I'm wondering - can you change the GPU/CPU after purchase?
For example, let's say a mobility ATI 6870 comes out. Can I replace my current 5870 with it?
Thanks in advance for the replies!

yes they are upgradeable. mostly it comes down to bios support but they are very user friendly & can be upgraded easily.

I heard that while the GPUs are upgradeable, the CPUs aren't b/c of new chipsets concerning the newer processors coming up...is that true?

You can replace it as long as you have a CPU of the same socket and has support for the chipset you have.

If you have a 720QM, then you can go to something like the 820QM or 920XM.

If you have a 520M or something along those lines, then you may be able to go as high as a 620M. I'm not so sure about going from a 520M to a 720QM or higher, there may be chipset limitations.

be very careful about voiding your warranty when opening up a laptop case.

It's the rare laptop that doesn't require major surgery and 30+ screws to 'upgrade' a cpu.

Opening up the Sager does not always void warranty. You'd be surprised what crazy things (fried GPU from tampering the can, removing this black sticker that comes in the vent, other mods) still fall under warranty.

I'm the one who fried the GPU from tampering the can, well, actually it did void my warranty, just that because Sager could probably get some sort of exchange done from ATI with the GPU as it's not physically damaged they decided not to charge me for the GPU. Still under warranty? Nope. Honest practise? Yes.

Companies should always value creating Good Will with their customers. :D

and customers should always read their warranty, it's part of the purchase contract. a legally binding contract.

Whether you will be able to upgrade to the next ATI offering is solely at the discretion of Clevo. There is no guarantee that they won't move on to a new 15" machine instead.

No BIOS update = no upgrade.

Sagers should be upgrable.. the GPU should be replaceable if there is a BIOS update and the GPU use same MXM format as old one.. as for warranty , be careful when opening up.. look for warranty void stickers... and as for CPU's , i guess u can upgrade from dual to i7 quad as clevo uses PM55 chipset which works perfect with quads.. there also should be BIOS support for the i7 quads..

Apparently not as "upgradeable" as I thought, but it's all cool because I'm getting an Alienware M15x...I think I prefer the eye candy lol

Well, judging from the past Clevos, you will be able to upgrade up one more generation even after the machine is replaced by a new one, officially supported or otherwise.

the sager 8690/8760 is as upgradeable as a laptop will get. if you want more upgrade-ability then you better get a desktop.
