I own a Clevo P180HM and I hate the stock screen with every fiber of my being. The slightest tilt induces a colour shift. It has some serious spill issues. Vertical viewing angles suck. Overall, the screen really sucks. I have a 299 eMachines that has a less crappy screen!![]()
I don't mind spending money for a quality panel, but the problem is that there aren't a lot of 18.4" panels out there.Non TN panels would be ideal, but I'll settle for anything with decent vertical angles and fairly even backlighting, even if it's TN.
Any recommendations? Thanks

Are you refering to the famous Samsung LTN184HT02 (RGB LED)-112% Color Gamut/ 1000:1 Contrast Ratio panel that equiped the those Sony laptops?
Saddly it seems it has been discontinued, according to this thread: http://forum.notebookreview.com/har...-gamut-samsung-1080p-18-4-laptop-display.html
The LTN184HT01 is CCFL, so it is not an alternative.
That being said, are 18.4" owners stuck with chi mei panels? It saddens me that 18.4" laptops are a dying breed.
-
So you know everything about it ..
Yes sony and samsung used to cooperate together with displays .. But not anymore according samsung increasing success..
Yah chi mei lcd are rubbish i got it on mine acer..
But now, I have 47'' LG TV so got it connected there..
I dont thing there arw more high quality lcds
Look on ebay there are faulty laptops sony you could be lucky find this ome led 3chip -
Thanks for the info and the tips GalaxySII.

Most people don't want a laptop bigger than 15.6" much less a 17.3" machine or god forbid an 18" monster. At that point people just get a smaller laptop like a netbook or a tablet and then a desktop. I say that people don't know what they're missing.
I hope there's a successor to the P180HM. Currently the M18x has no competition. -
18,4'' are great an it is NOT definately monster
I can see u now how would you grab 18,4'' alienware and it is new laptop -

I absolutely LOVE the screen on my Alienware M18X.
It may not be the highest spec'd screen, and does glare a bit in light.. However, when tweaked, it is a very nice display. -
thnx -
Unfortunately, the P180HM is the last of the line
Clevo has discontinued 18.4" models.
I agree that 18.4" is not for everyone's taste and needs, but it does fulfill the needs of a particular kind of user: people who need a portable device with a big screen. It's not a device for people who move around a lot, but for people like me who have to move from place to place now and then and do so by car, it is very convennient. A big screen, 3 HDD and lots of connectivity options that fit inside a single device that can be moved with a backpack. I was hoping that in a few years time we could see fairly lightweight 18.4" laptops but now that the M18x and an Asus model which name I can't remember are the last of the breed, I guess I'll have to settle with 17.3" screens next time I buy a laptop.
Do you know what monitor equips the M18x? -
Katabatik
Will I be able to fit that samsung screen to my acer ?
Will the connection be compatible?
Thnx -
IF you want it…..New Alienware M18x
Pros Blazing performance. Solid build quality. Sleek design. Cool lighting
effects.
Cons Expensive. Short battery life.
The 18.4-inch display is a thing of beauty, featuring edge-to-edge glass over black bezels, a 1,920 by 1,080 resolution, and outstanding color quality and black levels. The glossy anti-glare coating can be reflective under certain lighting conditions, but it punches up colors and provides nice wide viewing angles.
Also has a pair of SLI-enabled Nvidia GeForce GTX 580M graphics cards, each with 2GB of GDDR5 video memory. -

Review Alienware M18x Notebook - Notebookcheck.net Reviews -
This is how you should proceed:
1) Get a system analisys tool, like PC-Wizard (freeware) and check the manufacturer and part number of your current screen.
2) Search the web for the manufacturer's spec sheet (if available). It should have all the details you need to check compatibility between you laptop and the screen you want to buy.
3) Check the web for availability and prices and BE VERY CAREFUL with sites that sell screens named "compatible with Samsung LTN184HT02". This is not the original screen, its jus't as screen that has the same compatibility characteristics as the LTN184HT02.
4) Once you find the screen you're after check the following against your screen's specs:
- Data connector (14pin, 20pin, 30pin(S-L) , 40pin(S,M,L), 50pin 60pin ) and its position
- Physical resolution of the screen, in your case 1920x1080.
- Backlight type (LED or 1CCFL, 2 CCFL)
Currently, to the best of my knowledge, only Chi Mei and perhaps another manufacturer still produce new 18.4" screens. My clevo has a glossy Chi Mei N184H6-L02 and it sucks. Big time.
I saw a 16" Vaio today with a beautiful matte screen - wide viewing angles, nice colours and a magnificent matte treatment that didn't affect colour rendition and cut out reflections very effectively. Why can't they do that in 18.4"? -

I am quite fond of the 1920x1080 screen on my HP DV8t. Excellent contrast, blacks are true blacks, very very clear. The text is so clear that I run it at 76 dpi and the text still looks superawesome. Viewing angles are fine (although obviously you wont get a 180 degree viewing angle range). I have never been troubled by its viewing angles. No backlight bleed.
Only thing is that its glossy which I dislike. But movies look great in the dark! -
Cos it was veery expensive for them and only small bunch of people purchased this laptop with this screen it was very expensive 2500 some 3000 pounds ! -
-
-
GalaxySII,
What is your opnion on the your Chi Mei's quality? My complaints with mine are washed out colours, greyish blacks and terrible vertical angles.
Yes, the AW series did cost a fortune. Unfortunately, that famous RGB LED 18.4" panel was only fitted on Sony AWs. That is why it was discontinued and it's so hard to find, even second hand. -
-
Its CCFL lit, but its excellent. Vibrant colors. I have also had a 17" RGBLED dell screen, that screen was a teeny better in some aspects, but the HP screen is better in others. If the HP screen was matte, I would have preferred it over the dell matte RGBLED. The text is so huffing clear on the HP!
PS, the HP screen is 18.4"
I dont think the DV8t ever had LED panels, you might have better luck checking the HP DV8t owners lounge in the HP pavilion forum.
Its a great screen. The dv8t was/is an amazing laptop. Apart from the screen being glossy.
I carry it to work every day. Still looks like and feels like new even after 1.5 years. -
Yes, the DV8t was a fine laptop and as far as 18.4" laptops are concerned it wasn't that heavy (contrary to my Clevo which weights a ton). I almost bought one last Xmas. It cost 899 Euros in a stock clearance sale, but given it's age I couldn't justify the investment. It's a shame that HP discontinued it.
-
Amazing screen, excellent built in microphone, and a nice button for disabling the touchpad when your on the desk and using an external mouse. Great speakers. Not heavy at all. I use it in the bed on my lap all the time. Even worked on it on a flight (exit row seating)
Heck, I would recommend it at 899 euros even now -
-
you have to look on it proper directly from middle not any angle views 45 degrees or any .. JUST only 90 degrees
if i move i will see x-ray ..
I used to have AW11XU/Q vaio ... I sold it before I posted here if it is possible to exchange LCD from vaio to ethos acer..
someone answered : why would you do that ..
Check out thisand you will see the brothers ..

Kabatik
I wanted keep both of them
But I couldn't..I had to sell it .. to cover purchase of acer
-
I'm afraid the only way we get our hands on a sony RGB display is buying a Vaio. Believe it or not, in terms of quality, that Chi Mei is on par with my emachines 15.6" laptop, that I bought for 265 Euros new in a promotion. There is no justification for 1000+ Euros machines to have such crappy displays.
TheBluePill hasn't answered yet. I guess I'll pop the question about the M18x screen on the Alienware's owners lounge: It is our last hope to get a decent screen. -
Actually, I was quite tempted to buy one that was being sold for 799 Euros because it had a key missing. But again, why own two 18.4"? However, if I hadn't already bought the Clevo at the time I wouldn't have hesitated. -

Googled 18.4 inch lcd manufacturers. Try it…A lot of info.
Sample Result: Replacement Lcd Panels & AUO Lcd Panels on sales - CASIO Lcd Panel supplier, good quality CMO Lcd Panel factory from China, China HITACHI Lcd Panels company .
Other laptops using 18.4 inch LCD’s:
Sony VAIO VGN-AW270Y/Q 18.4-Inch Laptop
Toshiba Qosmio X505-Q8104 18.4-Inch Gaming Laptop
ASUS NX90JQ-B2 18.4-Inch Laptop , Silver Aluminum
Reminder - There two types of laptop screens: LCD-CCFL and LCD-LED: these screens are NOT INTERCHANGEABLE.
Laptop manufacturers tailor their system for a particular LCD screen, so it is impossible to install a CCFL screen into a computer outfitted for an LED screen, and vice-versa.
The replacement screen must have exactly the same backlight type as the original (old) screen. Currently there are 2 major types of backlight for notebook LCD screens:
1. CCFL (Cold cathode fluorescent lamp)
a) 1-CCFL - contains 1 bulb
b) 2-CCFL - contains 2 bulbs
2. LED (Light emitting diode) -
Thanks for the link EasyCruz. I'm gonna check it.

New developments on the M18x screen: it's a no go. They are made by Samsung expressly for Dell and have a proprietary connector.
Our options are getting fewer... -
they asking me if it is LTN184HT02 or LTN184HT03 do you know which we looking for? -
Not finding what you need? Check this out, custom engineered LCD options
Will they design 1Z/2Z’s or by lots of 10/100/1000?
DIT is an acronym for Display Integration Technologies, in Vista California

It would be cheaper to ask some electronics geek to come up with an adapter to fit Dell's proprietary connectors to a 40 pin connector.
-
According to my local Clevo dealer, these guys a one of Europe's biggest screen suppliers: Laptop Screen | Notebook LCD Display, LCDScreen und Displayreparatur | Notebookscreen, Laptopscreen, Screens . I asked them for alternatives to my Chi Mei, Here's their answer:
"Unfortunately i have bad news. We can´t provide a compatible display for the N184H6L02 with better quality. Sorry, that we can´t help."
:-( -
We do not stock this model, the LTN184HT03 would not be compatible.
They said that led wont' fit in aw11xu/q
jesus that laptop CAME with that screen - I said to them
They probably has no clue ..
but they also said : LTN184HT02 is LED backlit, while the LTN184HT03 is CCFL. -
