I have no AHCI and my BIOS is locked by Acer, now could someone please tell me the limitations of any speeds with the ICH7-M controller, I do not want to spend money on a high speed SSD and unable to utilise it's potential due to my controller. I'm not loking for a large capacity and will be using as a boot drive, Thanks for any guidance and suggestions.

Yes.. you IDE mode doesn't do NCQ's multi-threaded read/writes. Also, you'd see sequential read/writes capped to ~130MB/s since ICH7M cannot do SATA-II. See http://forum.notebookreview.com/har...arket-upgrades/460478-ich7-m.html#post5900890 for comparative performance.

Thanks nando4, I have read your post and my ability to play around with BIOS is very minimal, saying that what is the best alternative available.
I'm not expecting a super fast ssd, my usage patern consist of browsing, some Office, youtube and nothing much. My laptop is 3 yrs old, just want to try a SSD to last for a couple of yrs, could you please suggest few which are sufficient for my needs.
Thanks again for your time. -

http://forum.notebookreview.com/not...-ii-mlc-internal-ssd-99-99-ar-newegg-com.html will do the job nicely. Consider then using a optical bay caddy to host your HDD to provide a SSD+HDD setup. See http://forum.notebookreview.com/har...rage-using-optical-bay-caddy.html#post4936086 .
