    Hey...

I'm on the look-out for a new HDD. I currently have a Seagate Momentus 7200.2 200 GB HDD in my new T61 but it's actually quite loud.

I'm looking for a HDD which spins with at least 5400 RPM and boast at least 200 GB. The most important factor is that it's silent...

I've been looking at the WD Scorpio WD2500BEVS 250 GB and Samsung SpinPoint M6 HM320JI 320 GB.

Can anybody recommend a HDD or are there any tests of HDD's regarding noise ?

    Regards,
    Jakob

I would recommend either going for a one platter 160GB or two platter 320GB. They perform better than 250GB versions.

There are a couple of drives tested for noise here: http://techreport.com/articles.x/15079/14. As you can see the WD3200BEVT is very quiet. It also uses quite a lot of power and gets hotter than average. So for maximum battery life I do not recommend it.

I've heard good things about the noise levels of Hitachi 5K320, Samsung HM320JI and Fujitsu 320GB/5400rpm. I own the Fujtsu and can confirm it is very quiet. Performance wise, the 5K320 and Samsung are better.

I've just found two reviews naming the 5k30 as 'sehr leise' = very quiet. Link.

There's more info in my signature.

If you're looking for cool 'n' quiet + decent performance - Fujitsu MHZ2320BH is good, or the Hitachi 5K320....(whichever you can get at a lower price)
