Not sure what dead pixels look like but what could this be? This is not on the surface. Do I need to replace the screen?
-
They do look like dead pixels, because stuck ones are normally white/multicolored. One thing I would try before looking into a new screen is the pressure fix. What you do for that fix is push hard against the screen with a thin dull object, like a pen with a cap, and push hard enough to make the screen turn colors.
-
they look like dust to me.
Is their colour like dark brown?
Did try to clean you rscreen? you could use a piece of fabric with a tiny bit of water on the fabric.
One way to spot dead pixels is to change the background colour of the desk top to pink -
I wouldn't use anything hard to unstick dead pixels... you'd risk puncturing the screen. I usually just massage with my fingers. You can also try UDpixel ( http://udpix.free.fr/)
-
they don't look like dead pixels to me.. looks like dirt
try displaying different coloured backgrounds and pay attention to that particular spot. If it stays the same, try turning your monitor off and check again. If its not there its probably a dead pixel. -
softy fabric like the one used to clean TV sreen or binocular wont damage your screen. You could even use kitcken roll (paper roll) to clean a laptop screen from dust, dirt, fingerprints and else
-
Here is a side shot. Notice it is sorta white behind the dot.
Here I push on the screen but not on the dead spot but it appears like it is pushing on the dark spot. -
Looks like the screen might've been dented there which killed the whole spot?
-
the way to now if its dead pixels or not, is to run the mouse cursor over it.
If the black is still over the cursor, than the pixels are the problem. If the junk goes away when the cursor id behind it, it is just dirt.
Use your finger nail, and gently feel to see if there is a lump or not. If there is a lump, its just dirt, but if its smooth, they are dead pixels.
To clean dirt, get a microfibre cloth, and lightly dampen it with rubbing alcohol. Than slowly rub in circles around it, and it should break the dirt down, leaving a clean surface.

If I place the arrow cursor over the spot the black line of the cursor can still be seen.
-
Is you laptop still under warranty?
From the picture with the pink background it is hard to say if it's dirt or dead pixels.
Do as K-Tron suggested. Use your fingers and nail to feel if the surface of the screen is even or not. And clean it too.
If those are dead pixels and your laptop is still under warranty you have a strong case to RMA. -
A pixel is one of the squares in ur picture. The pixels on the outside have some of their square masked with black/brown and some not. If it was dead pixels all the area of their squares should be black.
Please correct me if I'm wrong. -
You're not wrong.
-
-
I guess I am buying a new screen now since rubbing made 3 dead or stuck pixels appear in the vicinity of my blob.
-
Have you tried any software to get rid of that dead pixel ?
-
This doesn't look like a dead pixel to me. From the ripples around it when you showed the side shot and when you pressed, it sure is indicative of something that's physically stuck there.
-
kreidel, its not dead pixels. That last picture shows it.
When a pixel dies, the entire pixel will be black. Most of those pixels are not entirely black, meaning that they are not burned out.
Try cleaning it some more, and it should come off.
Do you feel anything when you rub your finger over it?

I helped a friend to fix his Acer TM 290. While fixing it, I upgraded his screen from 14.1" to 15.1". The 15.1" is superb but has some stains. I think it was super glue stains. One of them was small and the second one about the size of a gain of riz.
It took me about 15 minutes rubbing with alcohol and small piece of cotton to get rid of the small stain, and over 2 hours for the other stain. And I didn't make any dead pixels. -
Probably your LCD is loose from the top, etc and some dirt crept in (maybe)
-
Well I'm sure of one thing, those are not dead pixels. -
From that pic in post#12 it looks like a marker imprint. Do u have kids and/or markers around?
Try cleaning the spot w/ some kind of safe LCD liquid solvent or something! -
How did you upgrade the display size on a laptop? -
UPDATE
After rubbing and rubbing a piece broke off and fell about ¾" down from the main glob. This tells me it is not a stain or mark on the outside but something trapped inside. I also have 4 stuck pixels that were not there before.
-
You could upgrade the size of the screen on a few notebooks. They were offered with 14" and 15" panels. Their are a few Dell and IBM laptops that were like that, I cant remember models, but it was done.
For example one I can remember, is the Clevo M590KE could be upgraded from the 19" to the 20". All that was necessary was a new screen, and a new plastic bezel.
It seems like their is dirt behind the film on your screen.
I dont know if their is actually a way to remove the film and clean it out. You may just have to use your fingers and try to loosen the rest up, and keep working it to the bottom of the lcd

I swear I would get a heart attack if my screen looked like that. Dude get that fixed ASAP. Somehow...someway.
-
Gateway wants me to send it in and they will evaluate it then. They said it would take 3-4 weeks turn around and if it was something I caused it will cost $490.
-
hmm...*sigh*
I've had to replace my Compaq's laptop screen in the past...and HP told me it would cost me $400 seeing that I had no warranty etc. So I got a replacement monitor from ebay for my brand/model laptop and installed it. $185.99 for the monitor and $10.50 for shipping...Total cost of $195.49 -
I found this one for $230
http://cgi.ebay.com/NEW-GATEWAY-P-6...31569QQcmdZViewItemQQ_trksidZp1713.m153.l1262
I might just sell it to someone who wants to do screen upgrade and give them a deal. -
Right!...look around for something cheaper though...and go for it...it's not that difficult to install...just need a bit of patience.
-
Dude, dont buy a screen if you have warranty left.
Tell the guy, the situation, and send the gateway tech some pictures in an email. Tell them that dirt was present behind the film on your lcd at purchase, and that you tried to clean it away, but the dirt clot broke up and is now scattered along the bottom of the panel.
Ask in a very straight forward manner, if your situation is covered by the warranty or not.
If its covered, than send it in for repairs.
If the warranty is not their, than buy a replacement panel from screentek or ebay.

Beside the L shaped frame, the upper part of a screen is also covered with a masking type to protect a large electronic board inside in the back of the panel.
I think you have a stong case for RMA even if your warranty is over.
With Ebay is hit an miss. So if you're not in rush and are bidding at the right moment in the right day, you can get a replacement screen for as low as £80 including shipment. Otherwise you could end up paying as match as £200-£250.
One advise though. Before buying a replacement screen ( If the RMA option doesn't work), open your laptop to see the reference of the panel. Not all the screens are identical and sometimes a same series of laptops use different panels from different manufactures. Sometimes, it doesn't matter but in other occasions if you go for a different panel you'll need the right display cable that goes with it, and possibly even a different inverter. -
If I was a lucky person I would try and RMA it. I am not lucky so they will say I somehow injected dirt under the screen and try and get $500 out of me.
-
i doubt it, i mean how the hell could you "Inject" Dirt under the screen, as said before the dirt must have been stuck just above view point before it left the factory and you've somehow dislodged it.
-
If you talk to them before sending it in, they'll tell you if they charge you or not.
Anyways, you shouldn't have rubbed that thing, knowing there was a physical object under it pressing against the screen, you're bound to kill some pixels. -
I think this should help you understand that nothing can get inside a screen panel after it has been sealed in th factory:
http://www.laptoprepair101.com/laptop/2007/12/09/replace-laptop-backlight-ccfl-lamp/ -
you should send it in to get it replaced if you're still under warranty. There is no way they can blame that on you, but I don't think this falls under a dead pixel replacement warranty. This is uncommon and they might charge you for a replacement
-
It's less than 2 months old. I doubt they would replace it and if I send it in and they won't I am not spending $500 on an LCD from them. And I will lose even more money shipping. -
i wouldn't if i were you i would complain, isn't there a special organisation you can contact if you're not satisfied by your service of a company?
-
-
You want have any problems since it's still under warranty. Give them a call or email them, they may even offer to sort out the collection and the re-delivery of the laptop once fixed.
Under warranty = Don't try to fixe it yourself; LET THE MANUFACTURER DO IT. -
When I did call it sounded iffy. They gave me an RMA for service but it sounds like it can go either way and I am not a betting man. I would hate to waste $60-80 dollars round trip shipping if they won't replace it and have it tied up for 3-4 weeks.
-
if they don't replace it and it's under warrenty they're breaking the law, meaning you would be able to sue..
Correct me if i'm wrong.
Are these dead pixels?
