Hi! I'm new to this forum so please excuse me if my question has been answered in previous posts. I did a quick search but didn't find anything useful.

I have an Acer Aspire 5315 with 2-512mb memory chips (533MHz). I want to increase RAM so I purchased a single 512mb chip thinking that I could just add it. I was under the impression that there were 2 empty memory slots. Guessed wrong. Anyway, my questions is...Can I install a 1GB chip and leave one of the 512mb chip in the computer OR do both chips have to be 1GB in size?

Also, am I correct, now, that there are only 2 memory board slots in my computer?

    Dale...

Yes to both questions; yes, your notebook only has 2 RAM slots (which is true of most notebooks... some of them even have one slot permanently soldered so there's only 1 upgradable slot. There are notebooks with 4 memory slots, but they're usually higher end), and yes, you can replace one of the 512 MB SODIMMs with a 1 GB SODIMM. You will "only" get asynchronous dual-channel at best, but that's not generally noticeable.

My brother had that laptop, and he upgraded it to 2GB(1GB X2) no problem. I believe it will accept up to 4GB's though.
