    Hi,

a noob question but i´ll just put it out there...
So, i was wondering if it were possible, im using 3gigs of ddr2 memory but my motherboard´s supportet memory types are:
Supported Memory Types DDR2-667 SDRAM, DDR2-800 SDRAM, DDR3-667 SDRAM, DDR3-800 SDRAM, DDR3-1066 SDRAM
i read about it a lill´, seams it´s not physically possible... just checking ;)

would it be possible to integrate DDR3 ram?

    Kind regards.

AFAIK, its not possible it uses both, no.

I searched a little and it seems to have DDR2 memory. Although, maybe Acer found a way to use both in one slot? Try contacting them to make sure... ;)

No actually. I have Aspire 6935g with ddr3 memory and tried to put ddr2-800 memory but it didnt work, i couldnt. Cause slot ddr2 slot was different. ;)

I think a friend of mine has 4gigs of DDR3 ram in his aspire 5920G.
I´ll just lend 2gigs and try it out. Who knows, maybe it somehow magicaly fits :)

Hmm, well im guessing then thats there are different versions of the laptop. one with DDR2 and one with DDR3.

So, it seems to me, that whatever type you have now, your stuck with unfortunately

While DDR3 has the *potential* to be faster than DDR2, current benchmarks performed on hardware that is available in the retail channels show that DDR3 is not (yet) worth the price difference. 30% more expensive for a 5-10% performance improvement? No thanks. Most systems are disk i/o bound anyway, memory and cpu sub-systems are sitting idle waiting for disk i/o.

DDR3 will start to shine only when there is universal support in chipsets and operating systems for multi-channel (4+ channels) and striped memory access and a fully-featured MMU. You know, something like the direction AMD is taking things with their evolved hyperchannel interconnects.

Until then, DDR2 is the way to go.

Instead of spending all of your $$ trying to eke out single digit performance gains from current hardware it might be smarter to save your $$$ and buy a new, fully integrated system in 6-12 months.

    YMMV, of course.

    FYI

    http://www.play.com/PC/PCs/4-/94813...DDR3-200pin-SODIMM-Laptop-Memory/Product.html

    Memory Size: 2GB
    Memory Type: PC3-8500 DDR3
    Memory Speed: 1066MHz
Form Factor: JEDEC-Standard 200-pin Small Outline Dual Inline Memory Module (SODIMM)
    Unbuffered
    Cas Latency : CL5
    Description

DDR3 is the next generation of DDR memory. DDR3 memory features faster speeds, greater bandwidth, lower power consumption and enhanced thermal performance. Although DDR3 modules are the same physical dimension as DDR2 and DDR modules, the plug-in connector configuration is different and as such DDR3 modules are not compatible with PCs requiring DDR2 modules, and vice-versa

    Having said that.....
I bought it anyway and I will try it on my Acer 8730G and see what happens... lol
If it doesn't work... well.... I guess it will be going to Ebay if I can't get a refund from Play.com

I'll keep you posted guys ;)

It won't work. This isn't one of those "try and see" type of things, it's actually pretty black and white. Using DDR3 RAM in a computer designed for DDR2 is like shoving a floppy into your DVD drive.

    But again...

My motherboard supports 1066DDR3 ( according to Everest Pro) and the module has 200 pins.....

    who knows...lol

Besides, what do I lose? time?? ;)

    So...
    Should I sue this website
    http://www.advancetec.co.uk/acatalog/Corsair_CM3X2GSD1066_2GB_DDR3.html

    and this one

    http://www.scan.co.uk/Products/2GB-Corsair-DDR3-1066MHz-200pin-SODIMM-Unbuffered-Lifetime-Warranty

    ....

    http://www.play.com/PC/PCs/4-/94813...DDR3-200pin-SODIMM-Laptop-Memory/Product.html

    and hundreds of more websites....

    are they all misleading???

PS: I am not saying that it will work on my laptop for sure. You are not the first person who says that it will not work, but I gotta try it to make sure, mate....

Companies have the lines below in their terms and conditions that prevent them from being sued...these companies are run by humans who can make mistakes.

JEDEC specifications for DDR3 SODIMMs is 204 pin. You can sue those companies, but it would be a waste of you time, just like trying to put DDR3 RAM into into a system built for DDR2.

Anyway, upgrading from DDR2 to DDR3 is the worst upgrade ever...No benefits at all or almost

Well even if they have the same number of pins , there's just not electrically similar and use different tech so if you have a DDR 2 ports on your laptop , even if your motherboard supports DDR3 memory, you cannot use DDR3 memory...

    DDR3 will work with a DDR2 motherboard.

    DDR2 will work with a DDR3 motherboard.

This has been said many times and is indeed true. Even if the motherboard is capable to reading DDR3, DDR3 will not physically fit into DDR2 RAM slots.

No, DDR2 and DDR3 are compatible with the same chipset. It is the motherboard's physical memory slot type that determines whether it will be DDR2 or DDR3. No notebook's motherboard can support both.

Yess, i guess this is the best explanation there is...
a lil´ offtopic, could you tell me what would be the best graphics card for the aspire 6930G?
my chipset is intel cantiga pm45, other specs in my signature.

I bought one of those last Saturday on Ebay (still waiting to receive it ) for $110. I think the postage was about $15

PS: Sorry for having stolen the thread. It was completely my fault :(
