    Hi Guys,

Always found answers on this forum very helpful, wondering if someone can help me

I have a Acer Aspire 7740G with the latest bios, i have purchased a i7-740qm for it as the service manual says that the i7-720qm and a i7-820qm will fit and work but when i swap the CPU i just get a black screen. Does anyone know if the 740qm is compatible with the Aspire 7740G? Wondering if a have a faulty chip, it said tested and working on the auction

    Thanks in advance

    Will

The 740qm should be compatible, it's basically a 720qm clocked a bit higher.

    Try some things first.

Try doing a power drain to clear the CMOS:

    - Remove the AC adapter
    - Unplug the main battery
    - Unplug the CMOS battery (If you can't access the CMOS battery, try pressing the power button for around 15 seconds after the AC and main battery are removed. You'll need to reset your time/date after doing this)

    Other things to try:

--Try unplugging and re-seating your RAM. If you have multiple DIMMs, you may want to try one at a time to see if the system posts.
    - -Remove the CPU and inspect it for damaged or bent pins. Make sure thermal paste is applied properly as well.
-- Check if Acer has any BIOS updates for your laptop as well.

Thanks for the helpful replies guys, im an IT Tech by trade so Ive tried the above already. I assumed it was compatible looking at the specs of both CPU's as they were identical bar the clock increase

I didnt know if someone knew if Acer blacklisted the chip due to temps or something of that nature? I will return the chip to the seller and try and get a refund

    Thanks again
