I am considering buying the Asus G1 laptop, and I have a question about the graphics upgrade. I know a lot of laptops do not let you change the graphics card at all, like you would on a PC, but some do. Is the G1 one of those laptops in which you can upgrade the graphics card or not? Also what kind of processor would i need if i wanted to upgrade that as well?

    Thanks..

The G1 has the most powerful graphics card currently available in a 15.4" laptop and hence even if it were physically possible (which I don't think it is) there would be nothing to upgrade to! The new DX10 cards (ATi X2300 etc.) are still being worked on for use in laptops as their heat output and size are too high for laptops right now. Again, even if it were physically possible to put in a DX10 card the card itself would not be as powerful as the X1700/go 7700, just DX10 capable.

I believe the G1 has a core 2 duo T7200. There are possible upgrades to the T7400 and T7600 but neither would be remotely cost effective considering the minimal power increase. The new 800MHz FSB Core 2 Duos due out later this year would not be compatible with the current G1 as they require the new centrino pro (intel 965) platform.

The G1 is probably the most powerful mainstream 15.4" notebook available. As such upgrades are either impossible or just not worth it.

    Something to add,
Rarely you can switch Video cards in a laptop, certainly not in the latests. But as Jess_paws says G1 is one of the most powerful (if not the most) laptop in the market right now, for 15''. And the price is not crazy.

    g1 has a removeable gpu

If you could find a gpu to upgrade it to in theory this would work

Its very unlikely you could obtain an asus 8600 in that format if one were ever made for a similar model

However it could be done, it is possible.

the G1 series do not have upgradable GPU's or MXM slots.
i have taken my G1 apart to verify (rather dissapointedly) that this was true.
someone else on here has done the same with their G1s.

the only things you can upgrade are
    Hard disk
    memory
    CPU
wireless card (mini PCIexpress slot - so you can put in what you like)

bit gutted i can't put an 8800 in there ;) but hey, such i life

I guess that if they made it a separate card, nobody would need to upgrade to the G1n :D
