I have an Asus G1S-A1 (specs below). When I turn it on, the screen is completely blank. I can still hear the start up noise and when I click around, I was able to open music files that were on my desktop. This happened before because of the Graphics Card (NVIDIA GeForce 8600M GT). Is there a way to replace this card with a different one?
THANKS!

There has been a rash of G1s failures recently. Unfortunately, you cannot replace the video card separately from the motherboard. If you RMA it back to Asus, chances are they'll offer to replace yours with a newer G50 for a reduced price (if you're not under warranty).

Dead GPU and like Bobxx said , RMA it... the NVDIA 8000 series especially the mobile one is hopeless... what was NVDIA thinking when their subcontracters used losy solder?
-
Apart from that though I agree, hopeless. -

The 8800 desktop series were and still are very good cards. The 8800 gt, 8800 gts 512mb, and the 8800 gtx can still game at high settings.

I called ASUS and how much do you think it would cost to replace the graphics card? Do you think it is worth it?
-
Most likely expensive ($250+?) and not worth it.

I had the same problem with my out-of-warranty G1s. They don't make the mobo for it anymore so they sent me a G50vt-X5 for $250. A pretty sweet deal, the 9800m is twice as good as my old 8600m.

Mine, too. Had my G1 series (a nice gaming rig) for about 16 months before it blew. Found out after the fact that it was a design problem - but by then it was out of warranty (my bad there, i bought it from Best Buy and they only came with a one year warranty standard) so I had no hope. Repeated contact to Asus revealed that the laptops were no longer being supported, so even if I chose to send it to them for repair I could not, and there was no local repair option.
So, yeah. Mine is sitting, lifeless, propped up on the side of my desk, where it has been for about 6 months. Hope you can find someway to recycle yours or part it out and get something out of it - I never could with mine. -
Not worth repairing it .. could cost $300+++ as you need to replace whole motherboard i think.. instead save that cash and buy a new laptop.

Do you think if i keep the hard drive, they will still replace it?
