I have an Asus G2S-B2 and would like to get the blu-ray drive in there. The extreme edition I know comes with it, but you have to like wasting money to buy one of those for $1000 more. Does anyone know of a way to obtain that drive, since it will be easiest to install install my G2S? I contacted Asus, and they are playing politics and not sellign the drive to me because I did not buy an extreme.

ok, wow, a notebook forum, where people won't discuss notebooks...

Its understandable if you are frustrated, just don't make it sound like this isn't one of the bigger notebook forums on the web.
You are probably not going to find a drive like this, I looked through a few pages of google and I couldn't even get a part number.
Just call up Asus, ask for a replacement Blu-ray drive for your G2S "extreme", have them send it to you, and install it.
Just say that you bought the extreme from the get-go, don't mention that you didn't buy it in the first place. -
I thought of doing that, its a fairly solid idea. I will give it a shot, but its game if they check at all, serial # etc.
-
Why should they have a problem with making a sale though...especially since you are paying for the part. I don't get it.
-
Has do with with what they pay for the two parts that make an extreme and what they sell the extreme for. First, does it cost them $1000 for those two parts, absolutely not, maybe $300-$400. I won't even get into how much of a joke 'extreme edition' CPU's are, I hope everyone understands they cost so much because they have that name printed on them (I can show you a 3.0GHz clock 1333Mhz FSB 2x2MB L2 Core 2 Duo for $190 retail box).
Second, they can clearly get away with marketing the laptop for $3000 with its special names and blu-ray reader.
That targeted group is already fairly small, how much smaller would it get if these enthusiast knew and spread word you could just get the useful part (blu-ray) OEM after the sale?
Wherever Asus get the economic analysis from, they've decided they're better off forcing and keeping people buying the extreme edition, they will make more money having less people pay out 50% more for the extreme edition than having more people come back and buy an OEM optical drive.
This is my best guess, no guarantees. -
You should be the new Asus CFO!
They charge what they do because the enthusiast crowd is a crazy bunch. -
But Greg made a good point! Just order it, do you all really think they do a background check? Not! Like much of the world if you look like you belong you get that level of service. So call and order I bet you get (as Greg said) setting up a system to weed out is too much.

After not getting it the first time, I went a head I bought a load of other hardware (yay). When I get around to trying this approach, I'll post what happens; I would imagine there are a few G2S owners out there in my boat.

It's just ASUS's way of dealing with a drive shortage. When they're plentiful you'll be able to buy the drives separately on Newegg like everything else. Maybe Mwave before Newegg, they got LG's 6X desktop Blu-ray writer weeks before Newegg did. Patience, grasshopper.
