It has a Core i5 or i7, and an Nvidia GeForce GTX 460m right? Pretty fast, depends on what your friends needs a laptop for.

It'll perform very well for basic tasks, but we need more specifics on what your friend is looking for in the G53Jw

A good all round PC, that will last him from 3-5 years, and be great at gaming.

I think it would last 3 years. Maybe 4 if he doesn't want to play the latest games.

The hardware should last him much, much longer, but given he wants it to be 'great' at gaming' - 1 or 2 years is pushing it, imo.

If he drops the 'gaming' part out - the system (properly setup and configured) should last him as long as his current requirements don't change (even 7-8 yrs should be possible): i.e. the 'general' nature of 'good all around pc' doesn't get changed to a specific nature like 'photo editing', 'video editing', 'sound editing', 'content creation', etc.

Once 'general' turns 'specific', then the hunt for a newer, faster system will begin. ;)

He would probably want a G73. It has similar specs but runs cooler and has more overclocking headroom.
