Hey guys, was looking for some help on upgrading my gaming laptop, Asus G73JH-BST7.
The current spec are
Intel(R) Core(TM) i7 CPU Q 740 @ 1.73GHz
6GB RAM
ATI Mobility Radeon HD 5870
Total size of hard disk(s) 281 GB
Disk partition (C9 GB Free (75 GB Total)
Disk partition (D206 GB Free (207 GB Total)
Media drive (ECD/DVD
I want to upgrade the RAM to the most I possible can, I know one of the RAM slots is on the other side of the mobo then the 3 open slots,so im looking to upgrade them all if possible,if not the open 3.
Next i want to upgrade the original(horribly slow) HDD to a faster one, probably 500gb would be fine but def 7200rpm and also add an SSD, in which case i found one option,
Amazon.com: Crucial M500 120GB SATA 2.5-Inch 7mm (with 9.5mm adapter) Internal Solid State Drive CT120M500SSD1: Computers & Accessories
Would just like to hear some ideas or feedback on what you think I should do upgrading wise. Thanks

Your system supports a maximum of 8GB memory, so the only upgrade possible there is to fill the empty slot with a 2GB module.
If you are adding an SSD, and are planning to put a 500GB hard drive in your other storage bay, then the hard drive does not have to be terribly fast, since the hard drive will only be used to store your own content (documents, music, videos, etc.), and you'll want to put the operating system on the SSD. I'd also suggest buying a higher-capacity SSD since you've got a gaming system. I've got 100GB worth of games on my SSD easy, and there are some I've had to uninstall because they all won't fit on my 256GB SSD while leaving enough room for the OS, overprovisioning space, etc. So I'd view 256GB as a bare minimum capacity SSD for a gaming system. Depending on how many games you want installed and how big your budget is, there are SSDs that go all the way up to a terabyte. I'd recommend between 256-512 GB as a target capacity. -

If there are only two Sodimm slots, then a 2GB RAM module will have to be removed and a 4GB Sodimm inserted to get the maximum 8GB RAM in the notebook.
Would not recommend a 120GB SSD to my worst enemy (some here may beg to differ) - agree that 240/256GB or 480/512GB or larger capacity SSD is needed for optimal setup and sustained use of any SSD you're considering to install. (Especially if you include 30% of the real/user capacity as 'unallocated'...).
Considering that I would also be recommending Windows 8 Pro x64 too, I would think the cost of these upgrades may not be worth it. Considering getting a new system/platform with IB or better yet; Haswell based components and also consider the selling price of your notebook towards the new system.
The performance increase in games will be negligible with the components you're considering - the performance increase (in games) with a new/current notebook will be obviously noticeable. Consider what/where exactly you need the performance increases in and make your decision accordingly.
Good luck.
