So I am about to purchase the steal of a deal Asus K53TA-BBR6 From bestbuy. I have heard the screen has issues but I really don't care as I hate the small 1366 x 768 resolution on a 15.6" screen(my x120e 11.6" has that same resolution!). What I want to do is swap the lame panel with a 1080P capable panel. I hear the Asus has a samsung LTN156AT02P09 panel. I have been looking at replacing it with some iteration of the AU Optronics B156HW01. Will this work?
I know the panel types are identical, LED with the same 40 pin connector. Would there be any issue with the inverter. I know the HP DV6 with the same specs uses that AU Optronics panel for its 1080p display version. I have swapped out panels for broken laptops of friends before, I believe I have the tools to get this done, please advise if my hardware choice is correct and if anyone knows a better panel or a better(cheaper) supplier of panels. Thanks

I'm very intersted in this too ...book-marking thread.
-
just bought it to. Just got done with getting all the bloatware out of it. I do love the specs but like OP i hate the screen res. Would love to swap out the screen! Bookmarking the thread!
-
cheers ... -
There's no inverter in LED backlit panels.
-
Is the stock screen glossy or matte?
-
Glossy. Would love to know how this turns out as well. Which version of the AU Optronics B156HW01 do you plan on using?
-
I picked one up and am looking into the possibility of the Sager screens as well (B156HW01). You can get them for $120 at most screen online retailers.
-
Has anyone tried xchaning screens yet?
-
Top because I want to see if someone else will do this first.
-
This would be sweet if it's possible. Anyone done it yet? Looking for a brave and fearless person to lead the way! =)

If you're looking at the HD 6720G2, DO NOT get it. It's bad...

Also, that processor is horrible... It's around the quality of the Phenoms, Turions, and Core 2 duos... And 1.4 Ghz? Lmao my phone is 1.2 -

I've owned both machines and they are great laptops for the money (see my sig). I got a great deal on the HP similarly configured to the Asus but with 1080p and blu-ray and slightly faster CPU and GPU for about $650. Can play every game out there, including Bad Company 2 at 1080p at 45-60fps. Most can easily get the CPU to 2.2GHz, and many to 2.4GHz. Some have reached 3.0GHz. So easy to overclock, and with care can tune it in to compete with an i5-2410m CPU with dual threaded apps. Can even get the system to outscore a system with i7-2630QM + GTX 460m.
By the way GHz means nothing. It's all in the architecture. Atom N270 is 1.6GHz, but it can't keep up with an old Celeron 800MHz. And your phone CPU probably wouldn't stand a chance next to the Atom. -
Plus you can always just turn off dual graphics. A 6650m is still the best GPU you can get for $450.

Has anyone tried upgrading the screen on these yet? It appears everybody chickened out. Since Christmas is coming up, I'm thinking of treating myself to a new screen, and excuse to disassemble my laptop.
Here's what I have in mind: http://www.laptopscreen.com/English/model/ASUS/G53JW/
I'd select the 1080p Matte screen for $69.99. I figured since it's compatible with the G53, it'd be compatible with the K53. I'm wondering if there is anything that I am overlooking, and if there could be anything else I'd need to purchase to make this work, since I have never swapped out a laptop screen before. I know there's no inverters on LED screens.
Additionally, could this have any negative effects on the lifespan of my gpu? Temps are never a problem at the default resolution of 1366x768 while gaming on Skyrim, rarely going above 74 celcius (with old 11.10 drivers).
EDIT: I've learned that a 1366x768 monitor uses a single-channel LVDS cable, where as 1920x1080 uses a 2-channel cable. Anyone know if this laptop comes equipped with a 2-channel cable? If not, is it just a simple matter of upgrading to a new, model-compatible cable, such as what is probably found in the G53? -

^ Why don't YOU try it first??
No its not exactly more likely that the asus g53 cable is compatible. Its also not necessarily true that you have a 20 pin cable just because you have a 1366x768 screen.
You just have to try it. Today I finally peeled back the tape on the LCD cable of my Dell XPS m1530 and was surprised to see that it was 40 pin; I tested a 1680x1050 LCD which didn't work. I think dell is more apt to whitelist LCD EDIDs than asus however.
Oh and, no lol your hands taking apart the laptop are totally a much greater potential negative effect than an LCD screen.
-
I went ahead and asked Asus what kind of cable comes built-in. Once I get a reply from them, I'll decide what to do from there. No reason why the monitor should be white-listed, so I'm going to give the benefit of the doubt. -
niffcreature ex computer dyke
Yea, on the other hand I'm pretty sure the XPS m1530 came with LG 1680x1050 CCFL backlit screens and that is what I tested
the difference being that it was matte.
I don't think you'll get an answer about the cable, you should just check it. -
The included LVDS cable turned out to be 40-pin, fits everything nicely.
I have now received my new screen and installed it into the laptop. Now, I can't get it to work correctly. Messing with the settings in Catalyst, I changed the refresh rate from 60 Hz to 40 Hz, the only way I can view anything on the new LCD, but there is either an overlay of red or pink. Messing with color and gamma settings work to an extent, but don't seem to get rid of the overlay completely, even without any saturation.
When I try to change the refresh rate back to 60 Hz, I receive this error:
Viewing on an external monitor, I receive this error:
Could the problem be that the motherboard doesn't supply enough power, could it be an issue with the cable (even though it is 40-pin), or could it be something else? -
-
What about a 720 screen with better a contrast ratio?
I broke my screen and need a replacement, I would rather upgrade to something better if possible. I have checked some of the sites mentioned in this thread and they fail to mention the specs of the screens.
What is the best screen that will be compatible? -
I'm wondering if a simple cable switch will allow the upgraded panel to function properly. Hopefully the necessary hardware is onboard but Asus just skimped on the cable since the dual channel cable wasn't necessary for the resolution the built in panel was capable of.
-
Don't want to double post but it seems the thread has gone stagnant and I'm still wondering if a cable swap will make the display work.
-
This is something i have no definitive answer for, however, i would venture that if the connector pins are there on the motherboard, it will work.
-
If you try a new cable, please post your results.

Ehhh... have you tried finding anywhere to buy a new cable from? The cheapest I've found is nearly $50(shipping included) for one, which is outrageous. Cheapest I can find: Worlds Greatest Site for Asus Spare Part
If I can find something $30 or less I could afford to experiment with this right now, but I'm a little hard-pressed at this time.
Edit: http://www.partstore.com/Part/AsusTeK+Computer+Inc./Asus/14G22102500M/Refurbished.aspx **********Requires adapter to allow LVDS cable to go through left hinge -
Awesome, let us know how it goes, I really want a 1080p screen for my K53TA
-
It works, but I need an adapter to switch the side of the LVDS cable to allow it to go through the left hinge to the mobo. Also, you would have to sacrifice your webcam because apparently the stock LVDS cable also connects that, which is probably why it doesn't provide the necessary power to the monitor despite having the right number of cables and such. I'm going to opt out for now since I need my webcam. Good luck with whatever you decide to do.

Im going to try N55SF LDVS CMOS MIC FHD for my Asus a52f x3 laptop, I already bought the B156HW01 V4 screen, it kind of works on my stock LDVS cable, its missing wires for the right colors.

Are you associated in any way with laptopscreen.com? -

-
Hey guys!
If you are upgrading, you should spend the extra bucks and go in for the B156HW01 V.4 (Research this panel)
(AUO, 1080p, matte, 97.5% Adobe RGB!!!, near absolute black levels)
It's currently out of stock, but we're expecting some new arrivals fairly soon, so you can put yourself on the notify me list.
Oh and I am associated with LaptopScreen,
Cheers -

For those who are upgrading to the 1080p screens, which LVDS cable are you using and where are you getting it from? The only thing that has stopped me from swapping screens with the G53SW was the need for a dual-link LVDS cable as the K53TA-BBR6 only comes with a single-link cable.

Looks like a lot of us are having problems with the Asus laptop display. The 1366x768 resolution is not good. I recently purchased an N53SV-EH71. Comes with an Nvidia graphics card with 1 GB RAM. I can't get the computer to default to this card. The Nvidia control program shows that this only connects to the external VGA port. Everything else defaults to the embedded INTEL chip.
The technicians at the Asus help desk can't explain how to get the Nvidia card to become the default. They simply say the the computer will adjust to the card when it needs to display 1080p. Don't know how that will happen if the LED display is set for the lower resolution.
Does anyone know if I purchase a new display with resolution of 1900x1080 that I can get the system to default to the Nvidia card?
Can't understand why Asus would build a computer with an i7 quad core processor, 16 GB of RAM and an independent GPU and give it a low resolution display! I bought this because of the great price and features. The description on the Asus web site said it would do 1080p. Tiger Direct won't take it back and Asus wants me to return it in exchange for a refurbished unit - but no guarantee that it will have problems corrected. -
So has anyone actually done this? Just a couple of people seem to say they have with no actual info on what was involved.
-
Can someone post pictures of k53 connector or sucesfull change?
my old notebook is broken (g51jx with full hd 15.6) so im interested in k53 as replacement.
And i hope old screen from g51jx fits k53.
(also looks like they have same keyboards but g51jx have backlight) -

Whats wrong with your laptop? Do you need a new graphics card? I've got one sitting around here, not much use for it.
-
need whole new motherboard.. (some charging issue :-( )
graphic card is fine -
-
What all is needed to get 1080p working on this laptop? Just a screen? LVDS cables?
Someone says u need a dual channel lvds which is not come with the new display? -
Does Any1 know if the lvds cable from this ebay item will work?
