Hi
I purchased the Asus 1201hab eeepc for airplane use. The weight and size is perfect. However I had a problem when I used it the first time on a plane. Using my headphones and the headphone jack on eeepc, the sound was very very low despite all volume controls being maxed out. When I use it in my living room, I can hear the volume just fine. However due to the loudness of being on a plane (cabin noise, wind rushing etc...) the head phones could not get loud enough to overcome these outside noises.
I own a gaming laptop that works great on the plane - using the same headphones - the volume is loud and clear. I just cant keep using a 15.5 inch laptop in coach. Not sure why I am having a problem with this Asus. A few people told me to try an exteranl sound card (usb), others have said I need noise canceling headphones, and others have said I need a headphone amp. Im not going to buy all of these things just to test out what works on the plane.
Any ideas what the problems are and what I can do to fix this? Im pretty close to selling the mini on ebay just to get rid of it and cut my losses. Thanks
Anthony

Did you go to control panel and check if the headphone output is up? You can also try VLC player for DVDs and music. Its volume control lets you boost the sound level. Just Google VLC player to find it.

I did try VLC and the volume control pannel... better than it was but not nearly as loud as my full size laptop.
Does anyone know if those external usb sound cards work ? -
well, had no choice but to bring my full sized laptop on the plane. not comfortable at all. but better than nothing.
i will be in the market to buy a new laptop in a month. selling this piece of garbage asus eeepc on ebay - ill be lucky if i get $75 for it. anyway, any recommendations for a laptop with no bigger than a 14 inch screen, battery life of 4 hrs or greater (will buy an extra battery as needed), able to play video (not blue ray - dont care about playing blu ray on a plane), must have sound card powerful enough to pump out the volume through 2 headsets (i use a y spliter and works great), and I would like it to be light weight.
Am i asking too much ? or are there good choices out there ?
