    Hello everybody!
I want to upgrade the notebook in sig. I know this isn't going to be a joke but I think I can manage it.
The hard part is, of course, upgrading cpu and gpu, and that's where I need the help of the community! :)

    CPU

    1) From what I've found out, my chipset supports Penryn cpus: infact, there are several notebooks featuring one of those cpus with that chipset.
BUT, according to everest the chipset only supports up to 800Mhz FSB. On the contrary, a lot of notebooks featuring that chipset provide 1066Mhz cpus: one of these is an Asus F5SL (that apparently is exactly the same hardware as my X50SL, BIOSes revisions included!), mounting a Core2Duo P8400 (which has 1066 FSB).
Could this be a simple everest fault?

    2) The BIOS that Asus provides for my notebook should support Penryn because one of the changelogs states: "Fix bug that it shows wrong frequency in setup menu and Windows when Penryn CPU is plugged".
BUT, will It support EVERY Penryn cpu or just a few? What do you think of this, if I went with a T9900 (which was actually released later than the BIOS) will I encounter problems??

    GPU

    1) Someone knows if my 3470 is MXM? And what version of MXM? Is there a way to find out without having to open up the whole notebook just for it?

    2) If I simply plug in another card, given that the TDP is the same as my 3470, will it work or there is something else I shold be aware? Does the BIOS have something to do about this too?

Allright, I've covered you with questions! :D I hope someone will be so kind (and expert) to give me some clues!
    Thanks!

Asus doesn't use MXM GPU's. They use their own flipped MXM which no other manufacturers use since Asus doesn't have other upgrade GPU's , your better off selling this and getting a new laptop.

    Thanks TomJG90!
I've now googled for reverse MXM and understood the matter. But, given that I found a suitable reversed video card, what do you think of the other points, e.g. processor?
    Thanks again!

    I'm back!
CPU swapped and X9100 put in! I chose an E0 stepping and works like a charm!
It overclocks up to 3.6GHz with just a slight voltage increase (one hit in throttlestop). Tested with Orthos and it's stable, temperature up to 90° in 3dmark06 in a 28° room, think it's satisfactory.
I generally keep it @2.93GHz, because this lets me decrease the voltage to the minimum and still Orthos-stable and really fresh (about 70° in Orthos).

In benchmarks @3.6GHz, I get scores about twice what I usually had with the T5750! Cool!
Gotta thank Uncleweb for his awesome program!

Good job, and second on thanks to Uncleweb. I have been using TS on my laptops for a while, and it really helps me get the most performance on all my 2 core lappys.

    Hi!
I guess it can take every Penryn cpu, since it has taken my X9100, which has 1066 fsb, latest penryn stepping (E0), 6MB cache.
BIOS version 301 "should" support Penryn correctly, but if you want to be sure just flash it to the latest 308 (that's what I've done).
In my case everything's working fine!

edit: it should be able to take the Core2 Quad too, the heatpipe being large enough, but I've read somewhere that some OEM put a Bios limitation to quad cores (even if I've never heard of ASUS doing that).
