I dont know how plausible this is,
But I recently purchased a w500 thinkpad, and have bought an 24" samsung vga/dvi as my external monitor.

What I want is that when the laptop detects that I have a monitor plugged in, it automatically configures a couple settings.

Use the 512mB discrete video card,
    Disable the laptop monitor,
Have the desktop monitor the default

Doesn't work that way - you have to manually setup your GPU to run your external as the primary notebook display. Also, your external has its own HDMI input setup as well, but it CAN be setup to sense an incoming HD signal.

You usually have a choice of Cloned Displays, Multiple Displays, or Primary (single) Display. The settings for Cloned and Multiple Displays also have specific settings for which monitor will be your primary. Cloned is having both your notebook and external monitors displaying the same thing at the same time, while Multiple is having your monitors display different displays of data - e.g., your notebook displays your desktop while the external displays an application.

It only takes a minute to setup, and once set you're good until you reassign monitor functions again.

So anything like how some laptops have configurations that users can switch between whether they're going mobile or staying in office, that wouldn't pertain to what I'm looking for?
