I have a Toshiba Tecra M2 w/ 2gb ram that I want to Upgrade the Hard Drive.
Have a 40gb 5,400rpm HD that has been running cool and quiet for 3 yrs running.
    * But, I need something Bigger ... I run Photoshop CS3 / Lightroom with it on the road.

    Prioritys:
    1) Bigger ... at least 100gb ( I do use External USB drives on the road )
    2) Faster ... if it is not too Hot or Unreliable

Yes, I do like the Seagate 5 year warrentees. but, is that the best choice ? and at what size and speed do you think is the best choice?

p.s. I do have a 6-cell primary,12-cell High capacity Battery, Slim SelectBay 2nd battary,Mobility iGo Juice ... so I normally do not run out of power, unless we are talking 12 hour flight.

Thank you in advance for all the help and advice

How much space do you need? I have been very happy with my Seagate 7200.1 though 100GB is the limit for 7200RPM drives in the short term.

But these are still pretty pricey as they are brand new. The Seagate 5400.3 momentus is a good buy, 160 GB at 5400 rpm, nearly as quick as the 100 GB 7200 for files transfers, definitely less zippy for access times.

Cheffy, notice you are running a 7.2k HD on a Toshiba.
    * Did you notice the HEAT differance when you upgraded? and how long have you been running the 7.2k.
My guess is you must have upgraded.

I have a 5.4k now ... do you think I will notice the differance on my Boot and Photoshop file loads with 7.2k?
Or should I go big 160gb @5.4k and have it run cooler, quieter, probably Longer (maybe) ... and be "just" as fast?

Curious, for all ... If you where me ... size is not critical ... but nice.
    * Would you go for Speed (at the risk of heat) ... or would you go for larger size, ... cooler, quieter, cheaper (per gb)

This Laptop is only run on a Network at home with data files on a Network drive ... But, when on the Road I would like to run my "on the road files" on the local HD instead of a 60gb external I use now.

Thank you all ... again for the help.... RDH
