Just recently bought seagate 240gb 600 series to replace my old drive. However am having some issues. Most of the time it would just freeze and will not get pass the BIOS splash screen. I have to power off several times before it will boot on my OS. Tried it on both ahci and raid and still the same problem. Tried also to use both A08 and a12 bios and the problem still persists. I have the drive installed in port 0. Have not tried on port 1. I have my old hard drive on port 1 as storage. I have Alienware m17x r3.

Any help is greatly appreciated. I really dont want to deal with the hassle of return and exchange. Sigh

My bad i should have stick with crucial ssds... But i got this seagte for $100 and thought i got a steal...lol

It may be finding the boot record on your old mechanical disk, and is getting confused which to boot from. Does it have the issue with the mechanical drive removed?

I dont think its my second hard drive that is causing the problem since i dont have any OS on that. And my old crucial ssd did not have this kind of problem.

Was the Seagate the only drive connected to the system when you installed the OS? Having more than one drive connected has been known to cause issues for some.

Was there ever an OS on the HDD? and, Did you clean install windows or Clone a previous installation?

When you say not getting past the Splash screen - do you mean the P.O.S.T. before windows starts?

But I would first try seeing if the system will boot once the second drive is removed or disconnected.

Hey guys just want to give update.

Am still having the same problem of freezing on p.o.s.t. Screen. However if i removed my second hard drive the freaking ssd will boot. Tried installing the second hdd (segate 320gb hdd) and it will freeze again on p.o.s.t. Screen. I have a feeling that its trying to acess my 2nd hdd on p.os.t. since i hear a single click before it would freeze.

I dont tknow if my 2nd hard drive is the problem. I tried to install back again my old sdd (crucial m5 128gb) and there is no freezing.

    So its like this:

    seagate 600 ssd (port 1) + 2nd hdd (port 0) = freezing
    Seagate 600 ssd (port 1) + crucial 128 ssd (port 0) = no freezing
    Crucial 128 ssd (port 1) + 2nd hdd (port 0) = no freezing

There is no OS on my 2nd hdd. Boot order is fine. Am confused already.

    Me too.

Did you ever have an OS at any time on the HDD that's giving the problem? Any mounted folders or hard-links?

Did you try to put the chosen boot SSD into port 0 and the HDD in port 1.

It's unfortunate but you'll have to keep trying things, otherwise send it back.

I did have an OS on the HDD before on the separate partition. I had to zero delete everything on the drive just to rule out the possibility that that might be the one causing the problem. But the freezing problem persisted even with that.

My old crucial ssd still has an OS with it but it's not causing any freezing problem whenever i put both them together ( meaning both ssds together- seagate ssd and crucial ssd in port 1 and port 0).

Yeah, I got that part. We're on different pages it seems.

Was the Seagate SSD cloned from any other drive or clean installed?

The symptom seems to indicate that the only way to know for sure is to clean install Windows to the Seagate SSD. Then add the HDD.

the Seagate SSD was clean installed. I did not clone it.

I was able to clean install in seagate ssd even with my old HDD was on port 0. But had to reboot 6-10 times over and over again until it wont freeze on P.O.S.T.

There is too much hassle reinstalling everything again... but i will try to reinstall it without the HDD and then add the HDD later. HOpe that will work coz am almost done making this work already.lol

I will update later tonight after work. thanks RCB

So many things it could be plus the issues JOSEA mentioned earlier.

Make sure you're in SATA AHCI Mode and if possible use a generic Windows download from the internet.

Ok guys. Just a quick update. I reinstalled everything without my old hdd. I put it on ahci (previosly raid). Everything went good in installation. But when i put back my old hdd back again i still experience freezing. But this time it is not freezing on p.o.s.t. And i can acess the bios. But it will freeze on "starting windows logo." I had to turn it off several times before it will stop freezing.

One thing i noticed also is that whenever i have this freezing problem (even before when it was freezing on p.o.st.) i would heard a click right when the splash screen would show up. I have the feeling that my laptop is trying to access my old hdd on port 0. Whenever i wont hear any click, there wont be any freezing.

Is it possible that this seagate 600 ssd is incompatible with my old HDD (seagate momentus slim 320gb)? But it is weird though coz they are both seagates drive.

If you can get into windows and access a administrator command prompt diskpart, do me a favor and report the following:

    Type:

    DISKPART
    select disk 1
    detail disk

    This info will be helpful

    Path:
    Target:
    LUN ID:
    Location Path: PCI ROOT(x)#ATA(CxxTxxLxx)

    If you want to additionally

    select disk 0
    detail disk

    same info as above

ok guys. just to give closure to this thread. Am pretty sure now that the problem is on my old hdd. I installed a new hard drive (a hitachi HDD) and boom my system booted with no freezing, nothing. I tried to install my old HDD (the one causing freezing) on my ps3 and my ps3 cannot even accessed it.lol

I dont know if this old HDD is close to being dead or it just incompatible with my new seagate ssd. anyway, thanks for all the help guys.
