Is that a sign that I should hunt for a new ccfl lamp?

No, that's a sign that you should hunt for a new LCD panel.
The CCFL lamp is not really a user replaceable part. I've heard of people doing it before, but it DOES require quite a bit of work, and soldering. Considering that it's tough to find a replacement bulb at all, and a WXGA 15.4" screen is going to cost under $100 shipped, brand new, on average, it's not worth going down that road (IMO).

But when you factor in the fact that my panel is a WUXGA and that a ccfl lamp cost under $20, I think it's definitely worth it. I just needed to be sure if the dimness and uneven lighting of the screen was due to the ccfl or the actual liquid crystals...

What you're seeing is almost always because of a dying lamp.
If you've got the skills to do it, power to you.
It's just that most users of this site, even the power users, would have an issue with this.

the screen is older than the laptop it's in. It was pulled from a Dell Precision M6000 then ended up on my IFL90 and when I bought the MS-1651, I just swapped the screen with the glossy wxga that came with it :D After spending that much time on a wuxga screen I can't stand anything less than WSXGA anymore.... :D
