I've got a Dell Inspiron 6000 and the screen went dark the other day. If you turn off all the lights in the room and squint just right, you can still see the desktop. From what I've read I think it's either a bad backlight or inverter, but I havent been able to figure out how to tell which is causing the problem. Any ideas?

That happen to my daughter's Dell 6000 and it was the inverter. I replaced it with an inverter I purchased from Ebay.

How did you figure out that it was the inverter?

I found out the hard way--bought a new lcd and it had the same problem. Then I bought the inverter. Now I had an extra lcd.

If you are able to do it yourself , check the connectors for the light. They may just need to be reseated. Dells rarely have this problem but some (averatec 3200's) are notorious for it.

Dell Inspiron 6000 - a year and a half old .... same problem. I gambled on the inverter board as my research pointed to it as the likely culprit most often. Cost ~ $75.00 and it fixed the problem. It was a very easy job to do.
