I have a Toshiba l675d laptop that has stopped working. I was told at the local shop that it has a bad graphics chip on the motherboard. A replacement would cost $350-400, and also probably require a new OS install, and that seems too expensive. So is it possible to repair the broken part of the chip only? I have seen 1 or 2 ad online for such a service, but I know nothing about them. I would rather not spend the money to buy a brand new laptop if possible, I like the toshiba i have now. If not I may be posting in the "what should I buy" section soon

Unless your model's graphics card uses the MXM slot, it's probably going to be soldered directly to the board. Therefore replacing just the GPU would be extremely difficult, if not impossible. Probably why the shop said you'd have to replace the entire motherboard.

try some reballing service provider, they do GPU resoldering, also check on the baking method, search term GPU baking

the laptop is dead anyways, so why not give those a go

resoldering GPU chip on the motherboard is indeed humanly possible, but cannot be done by novice, and its a hard job even for the most experienced soldering expert, thus if you can find the chips, chances are that you'll also have to pay more than the chips itself to get someone to solder it for you

If you have access to eBay in your area there are some that have shops on there that will reball or replace your defective GPU and get it back work at a decent price without you having to spend the amount your quoted at. And tell me where did they get those figures prices that is so high you can spend that money on a brand new laptop without hassle of reinstall the O/S. I think the shop is taking you for a ride some local shops have said they can do reballing or replacing those defective GPU and why this local can't tells me they shouldn't do or take your business anymore. Check with eBay to see if there is someone on there that does reball or fix the defective GPU and you might find someone that can do it and give you a warranty on their work.

Yes, reballing would be cheaper. In my company service does it for 60 euro, unless GPU works well.

Either way, the shop is trying to rip you off. Take your business elsewhere.
