Okay so I am thinking about doing another barebones build, either from MSI or Clevo? Scouring eBay and Provantage hasn't yielded me as much success from a few years ago, anyone know of any other sources to get barebones? Doesn't seem like MSI directly sell them to customers..

There are number of resellers that sell barebones with GPU, but the total cost in the end usually is not lower than ordering the whole thing.

Rjtech I think is one of the more popular one

    Well like Provantage has this

    PROVANTAGE: MSI 937-175621-006 MSI Notebook 937-175621-006 17.3 inch Wide I7 5 3 DDR3 DVDRW WL Retail

17.3" with GTX 660M, and all you need to add is CPU/RAM/HDD, but they used to have the older barebones closer to 300, and I can't seem to find anything like that anymore, seems like nobody carrys Capella platform barebones anymore.

There's quiet the amount of MSi barebone resellers here in Europe... but quiet the opposite with Clevo in the US.

Maybe you should look into a Clevo? They are usually good once you reach the 17" (more options +more space to "cool") :)

What bothers me not is the cooling, but the price and what components I can get for the money (IE MXM card vs soldered GPU for the same price).

The 15 inch clevo P150 notebooks have decent cooling, same heatsinks and fans as the 17 inch P170 versions.

2 fans, 2 separate heatsinks, fans are big, can force to max usually with the key combo FN + 1.

Copper fins on the GPU heatsink, aluminum on the CPU heatsink.

Are you planning to go gaming or just everyday usage for the laptop? I would say everyday usage would look on Craigslist if you in the US for a used good working order laptop. Otherwise as others have said just buy a pre-made custom to order that fits the bill. All the money spent on barebones would cost more then one ready to go. And plus you have the warranty to backup the laptop.

You can upgrade a Gateway nv78 to core 2 quad and MXM 3.0 type B.

the Clevo m860tu has good cooling but its MXM 2.1

There aren't any core 2 Clevo or MSI laptops with MXM 3.0 that I know of except the m980nu.

RKcomputer has MSI barebones in the USA.
