I notice that Sony notebooks have a battery protection program that allows you to charge up to a specified amount of either 60%, 80% or 100% to improve the life of the battery.

Are there any other notebook manufacturers that have something similar ??

Not typically. The whole charging to a certain % will not help much.

Setting the laptop to shut down at 30%-40% will.

What hurts batteries the most is when the battery is drained to critical levels 0%-7%

    Lenovo. Power Manager, i believe.

Sort of. Most batteries now have a hidden reserve charge that isn't reflected in the reported percentage. You can drain Li-ion batteries to 0% and recharge immediately and be fine. The problem is when you hit 0% reported, forget to charge, and end up discharging the reserve. Kill that and the battery forgets how to charge.

Well whenever I let my laptop's battery hit critical at around 5%~ around 3x-4x the charge levels drop by several percentage.

It's not affected much at all when it's discharged to around 20%-40% and charged back up to 100%. Also I often leave the AC adapter on.

That's probably more due to the fact that your battery meter is off. If you often leave the AC adaptor on with your battery inside, then all the small recharges will tend to throw off evaluation of the charge level of your battery. This is one of the main reasons for the recommended approximately monthly battery calibration, which involves a full discharge and full recharge.

Sony, Lenovo and Samsung use it. It does help.

Lenovo Thinkpads have this feature as well. And I seem to recall having read that Dell Latitudes also have this feature - someone correct me if I'm wrong.
