Battery is probably faulty, time to phone the manufacturer of your laptop or get a new battery.
You may be able to find out what 1 green flash and 3 red flashes mean in your owners manual.

How do I know it's not the charging circuit in the laptop itself ?

I don't want to buy another battery and fry it too!

    The manual was NO help.

Anyone know what this code means ??????

Man, your laptop is overheating, the battery has problems, and the AC-adapter tip broke. Sounds like you need to claim a warranty or start saving up for a new computer.

Very easy fixes, so why fork out another $500+ ?

AC tip is fixed, not overheating anymore since I blew out the fan/vents with a can of compressed air. New battery is only $52 via EBay.

The laptop is performing GREAT right now.

    AC Tip fixed.................Cost-$0.
Overheating issue Fixed Cost - $3
    New Battery ??............Cost $52
    -----------------Total Cost- $55

I just need to know if the bad battery was caused by a problem with the charging circuit on the motherboard.

I had a Latitude C640, and I would get the same flash sequence.

This means that the battery is faulty. The batteries would not charge.
If your laptop is still under waranty, Dell should give you a new one.

If you want, you can check to see if there is an output on the charger.

The battery on your notebook will only charge when their is a potential difference in the charge of the battery. No matter what the case, your laptop is always charging the battery.

To check the onboard charger, get a voltmeter, and see if any voltage comes out of the connector which the battery slides into.

If any voltage can be taken out, than you know that it is the battery.

How old is your battery? On my 7 year old Dell Inspiron the battery is worn out and will not take a charge. When plugged in it tells me it is fully charged. Why because the circuit sees it is not taking a charge so reports full. Full is empty! When your battery loses it's ability to hold more than 50% of it's original capacity it does not keep trying to charge it it says 100%. If battery is worn out 100% is the same as 0%. If this batt is not old "never mind".

15 months old. 3 months over the warranty period.

That is a little early for what I thought, could be but I do doubt with that age unless you discharge/charge twice daily something else. Also capacity drops over time.

To stop your computer from overheating, install I8KFANGUI. It is a great program. Just set your fans to come on at like 100F and go to full at 130F, then you should be fine.
