I had bought a new battery from key battery for my dell latitude and after about 3 months it just up and died. It didn't get progressively worse, it went from perfect like when got it to being completely unresponsive and dead overnight. If it is plugged in for hours and then is unplugged the laptop goes dead - there is nothing getting charged?

Any idea what might have happened???

Does it show the battery as present and charged or do you get a red cross or something like that? Maybe get a battery utility to check the status.

Batteries are mostly under a very limited warranty but after 3 month it should still be covered. Hopyfully its not the connection on the mainboard or something like that.

Is it possible to preserve your programs and data when you replace a laptop battery?

You loose absolutely nothing when your replace your laptop battery.

Try downloading a copy of Rightmark CPU clock utility. I believe on the site its called RMCLOCK. This program will monitor and tell you just about everything about your laptop battery. It will tell you the rate at which it charges, the wear on the battery, and pretty much every other battery spec.

WHen my Sony battery died on my dell last summer, I took it out of my laptop, froze it. Then I took it outside and threw it up and down in the air, about 20 feet. Then I let it clash on the grass. Then I cleaned my battery and put it back in my Dell 8500. Surprisingly it charged again. The battery is about 6.5 years old now and it still works.
