So my laptop has been out of a battery for 2 years and I just bought a new one from a reputable dealer, cost $115 and it's an Energy+ brand. Problem... it came at 100% charge, but it's been slowly discharging with use and won't recharge even 1% (even when left for 2 days). The battery charge light doesn't come on and I even tried the Asus BIOS battery recalibration tool but it just runs forever with no effect. I did recently open up my laptop to do some major work on it to accommodate SATA and i'm sure I got all the wires back in correctly (I do PC work for a living). Is there any tests I can do with a meter or something to diagnose this?

Here's a screen shot of the battery in action, i'm using MobileMeter.

Also if this is relevant, my laptop is an Asus W3J

    Much thanks,

First I'd request an exchange to ensure it's not a battery problem.

One of the battery's plastic "hooks" that allow it to latch on was slightly incorrect so I can to cut away half of it. It fits perfect now but I don't think they'll take a return on it. :D fail

Having done a lot of reading I think perhaps the laptop doesn't recognize the battery's internal chip and so refuses to charge it. Not sure... I checked the prongs on both the laptop (with AC plugged in) and the battery and they're both showing power. Hard to find out exactly which prongs provide data and which the actual current as different combinations of checking with my meter shows current on all of them and I know a few are for data and other purposes. Anyone want to point me in the right direction?

This reminds me of the Sony VAIO's that had a program (software) to verify if it was an original Sony battery installed. If it wasn't, then it wouldn't charge the battery.

I'd be looking for an equivalent Asus program to uninstall or disable or even try a Win7 clean install (on a spare HDD) and see if it will charge with a totally stock/clean Win7 install for you.

Hope I'm pointing you in the right direction.

    Good luck.
