My battery was working fine until one it just stopped functioning abruptly. If I remember properly, I had upgraded the BIOS from HP website.

    What should I do?

    I have a Compaq R4000.

Time to change the battery or is it a BIOS malfunction?

What do you mean your battery doesn't function?

    Any symptons?

If I were zynical I'd just say you didn't plug it in.

If it displays as 100% but the laptop will crash once the AC supply is removed - I had that on my SZ, its a battery failure.
If the battery isn't recognized - test on another laptop whoch utilises the same battery.

It was working fine but needed a calibration. So I calibrated it. That was the last I heard from my battery. It showed stuck at 3% for sometime but now it just doesnt show.

I dont know anyone around who uses the same battery. :(
