Somewhere on these forums I read some posts that said the laptop battery will die in 2-3 years regardless whether you use it or not. I assume those who use their laptops as desktops always or mostly use AC adapter and never/rarely use the batteries, then what do they do with the batteries? just as a backup in case power goes out? If you plug it in the laptop all the time the heat shortens its life, correct?

I think 2-3 years on a laptop battery is pretty good. My macbook about a couple of months ago started draining its battery pretty fast, used to get 3 hours and then was getting barely one, so i got a new one and im getting around 3 almost 4 hours. So you will eventually have to get a new one im afraid =/

If it was one of the old, lousy variety then yes. Otherwise, no, it's not very likely to die. I've had 2 laptops (a Toshiba and a Compaq) that lived around 3 years and in neither of them did the battery actually die -- it just lost about 30% of its lifetime towards the end.
Yes. It has happened to me once a year on average.
Again, it depends on the battery. With decent batteries, it shouldn't be by much.

That just sounds like a defective battery.

The batteries used in laptops start dieing as soon as they are made. You can reduce the speed at which they die by lower the heat, or by lowing the charging/draing. Either way it is only a matter of time before they wear out and die, they are consitered to be consumables.

Generally lifetime is reduced from 7-50% a year depending on the conditions of storage and use.

all batteries eventually die out over time but also check if your system has the latest BIOS as that can also improve battery life (most of the time)
