My drive presently has a flaw on it. While researching a replacement I stumbled across the fact that some folks have opted to install a second drive in this machine( there is a space for it). Is there a downside to this upgrade? and what are the gains that I will be able to see?...Oh and hello all, this is my first post.![]()

Pros: Possibly run in raid stripped to make your computer run faster (if you set it up). More space. Ability to run raid in a mirror for redundancy incase of a single drive failure.
Cons: It will run hotter, and last less on battery. -

To OP, well you can get more HDD space, more storage... You'll get C:\ and D:\ drive directories. And to upgrade, you'll need an interposer, Caddy and a set of screws to for second installment of the HDD. Call Dell for the entire set. -
"run in raid" "stripped to make it run faster"...You lost me at hello. I am new to this forum and a complete noob with the shortspeak. What is "raid" and how do I "strip" it to make it runs faster? My bad.

Once again, just forget about Redundant Array of Inexpensive Disks (RAID) setups in your 1720. Just because it has a 2nd bay for dual drive support that doesn't mean is capable. In the 1720 case, there isn't any support for it.

As said, an interposer and HDD Caddy Bay (To hold the Harddisk) is needed to install the 2nd drive in it. Just unscrew the HDD cover at your right bottom side and you'll see your first installed example in there of what you need. -
Thanks...I appreciate it. So I can effectively have a built in back up...that's it.

I didnt knew that we can put a second hdd in 1720. I thought it was only possible for M1730.
Benefits to a second drive in my Inspiron 1720?
