Hi, I've looked around and not seen any definitive answer to this. What is currently the best 2.5” 500GB HDD that is around £100? ($138.81) I would be willing to go to a 320gb if there is a massive difference in performace but would really prefer the extra space.

I believe that is the awesome power of the Seagate Momentus 7200.4 500GB. Newegg has it for $139.99, which is right in your price range.

I'm kind of getting the feeling that there isn't a huge noticeable difference between the two. Though I personally wouldn't know, not having had a 7200rpm drive before.

@TehSuigi - isn't there an issue of stock atm?

It seems that casperghost is in Europe with the prices in pounds or Lira.
I think the best place to look for a harddrive in Europe is SPAN.COM
They will have the 320gb and 500gb 7200rpm drives.
The prices in Europe are more expensive, so keep these drives in mind
    WD5000BEVT, seagate momentus 7200.4 and momentus 5400.6
The WD and the 5400.6 are both 5400rpm drives, but if the choice is between those, select the WD5000BEVT, it has faster seek times than the momentus 5400.6
The 7200.4 is the fastest 7200rpm 2.5" drive, but it may be hard to find or very expensive.

Thanks for all your replies, most places in the UK are selling the Seagate Momentus 7200.4 500GB for around £105 (inc VAT), but won't be in stock and ready to ship until 26th March. Hopefully my old hardrive won't die on me before then!

I just couldn't wait and I got the Momentus 7400.3.G 320GB in the UK (roughly 76quids). I just directly cloned my stock WD5400 320G and found that the performance increase is not very significant. I lost a chunk of battery life as well, probably around 15min. But of course that is no a problem since I plug in the the main most of the time.

I guess if you are using XP instead of Vista, you would definitely notice a quicker bootup time. Vista is just bloody slow.......

as an upgrade though, for a £100 and not having to deal with an external HDD, it still seems to make sense to go for the Momentus 500gb right?

wow "upgraded" from a 320gb 5400rpm to a 320gb 7200rpm? not so much... now i don't know how much a quid is but i would for myself say the benefit would be worth 10USD going from old drive to said drive. if you would have at least gotten the WD 500gb 5400rpm you would have the about speed increase of the 7k320 and an xtra 180gb... and i could consider that an upgrade... not to mention the WD is supposedly pretty silent and i don't think Seagate is particularly known for quiet. if you can get a refund I would and at least get a 500gb drive. but that's me...

All the Seagate drives I've own, three in total, have been pretty quiet. Noise is really hit or miss in my experience. You can have two drives of the same make and model, one noisy, the other not.
