G'day guys,
Im in the market for a 22" - 24" LCD. Kinda narrowed it down too the ASUS MW222U, the LG L226WTQ and the Samsung SyncMaster 226BW. How do these screens compare in reality?? I know that stats are similar, but I've been hearing alot about the samsung panels being poor, with problems.
Also was really keen on the Dell 2407 HC 24" LCD. But I know very little about 24" monitors. There's an offer on over here in Australia for this model Dell LCD which is quite good. Plus I'd get a defence force discount if I went with Dell.
Are there similar or better 24" monitors going on the market?
Sorry guys, I've never owned an LCD before as I've always had laptops, but im finally wanting a larger screen! So I don't know alot about them...
Cheers for the help,
Pommie

Speaking from personal experience I would say go with the LG. I own the L226WTQ (Slightly different ending though, there is a B somewhere there) and I love it. It looks fantastic, viewing angles are unbeatable and the display is very crisp. It swivels, turns, pivots, w/e. Great outputs as well and only 2ms refresh rate.
Plus if the prices in Australia are anything like in Canada, the LG will be the cheapest one. -
Thanks for that mate, I've heard the LG is good!
Anyone have any info on the 24" screens? Is Dell the best for them? -
Lg is good. The Viewsonic Pro series is supposed to be very good as well. I know it's a very popular choice for photographers looking for precision anyway.
The BEST screen would be a LaCie (not suitable for 3d due to lower ms response times) or an Eizo Nano but those will run you over $1500+ soooo in a 'normal' world Viewsonic or LG. I would not touch the Samsung. Dell is pretty decent but it's not as good as the other two. I'm insanely picky on image quality (to the point that I ended up with a CRT because I could not afford a LCD monitor capable of producing an image close to this) and the only two consumer affordable that I could tolerate were LG and Viewsonic. Take a look at the VP2250wb. -
Thanks for that Angel. Just to clarify, are you talking about 22" LCD's, 24" LCD's, or just the make in general?

I run a 19" LG Flatron Widescreen monitor to the right of my notebook for temps and Xfire. The colors are amazing. My Nvidia wallpaper looks totally different than my notebook, which has an amazing screen anyway. It is an older model (about 1 year), 5ms response time, 2000:1 DLC. I absolutely love, much like I love my 47" LG LCD TV!

I'd love a 24", but unfortunately, I know little about them. Also the higher price tag with somewhat reduced performance is a worry. I need info on which one people would recommend...

LG would be my choice of the two. No contest.

I just picked up a ASUS VW222U, and its running great, here are the specs, I also purchased a dvi to hdmi plug and plugged it in my hdmi port on my HP laptop, this thing is amazingly crisp and stable, I went as far as buying a usb keyboard so I dont have to look at my laptops 17" screen, $275CDN was a reasonable price also.
Model ASUS VW222U
Display Type 22" Widescreen LCD
Maximum Resolution WSXGA+ (1680x1050)
Aspect Ratio Widescreen
Response Time 2ms
Contrast Ratio 2000:1 CR
Brightness 300cd/m2
Dot Pitch/ Pixel Pitch 0.282mm
Input Ports VGA/DVI (HDCP)
Built In Speakers Yes, 1Wx2 Stereo Speakers
Power Consumption 55W
Tilt Adjustable Yes -
I say go with the Dell 2407wfp you mentioned. Doesn't use a TN panel like the other ones; better colors; 24in is huge; height adjustable stand; multiple inputs such as component video unlike the 22in. Only problem is the price, but you mentioned your defense force discount.
Or you could wait for the 2408wfp which should be out soon and has the new DisplayPort connector, dual DVI-D, HDMI, component video, composite video, and a nice black brushed metal finish and glass stand, but the 2408 will cost much more than the 2407 -
I wanted a Samsung 22 incher, but there was a deal at Target for a 22" Westinghouse display for only $167. I'm not sure of the performance since it's connected to an old Thinkpad. When you open a window, you can see it draw in thanks to the slow graphics chip trying to cope with 1680x1050.

The Dell display isn't even comparable to the image quality of the Viewsonic and the LG. It is absolutely not better quality. Have you even gotten to use the other two? I have used all three and I can tell you from personal experience that Dell is not superior. Don't know what to say on the Asus.. never seen one of those even recommended.

My question is, who is actually making the monitor and who is just slapping a name on it, back in the crt days it was common to buy monitors with the same specs, same parts right to the chip and diode and the cost could go either way by as much as 50%, I havent been staying on top of the who makes what lately but if somebody has an idea, please chime in because many companies are still going by the idea of Name sells.

check out the samsung 226BW, it's one of the best 22" lcd monitors, if not the best on the market right now

Just a little advice: the 22" Acer monitor I have does not have a dedicated button to switch between DVI and VGA. Instead, it is in the setup menu. That means 6 or 7 button presses to switch inputs as opposed to just 1. And if one of the inputs is disconnected or standbyed, it switches to the other input if that still has a signal. Very annoying! I use a xset command on each system to force standby in order to switch inputs. But I would be much happier if I didn't have to use that workaround.

By far, the Lenovo L220x. As far as I know, it's the only non-TN 22" monitor, and it has a 1900x1200 resolution. Personally, I'd go for a 24" like the Benq FP241W, NEC 2470WNX, or Planar PX2411W. Well, I opted for the 2490WUXi, but for a more reasonable price range, I'd go in that direction.

In my opinion, go for something that doesn't use a TN panel. Like Ethyriel said, most 22 inch monitors use TN so I would recommend looking at either a 20 or 24 inch monitor that uses a IPS, or PVA/MVA if you can afford it.
Read up the Wiki article about LCDs.
Cheap TN panels are the LCD industries dirty little secret and they would like to have you think all LCDs use the same technology. So you can guarantee that they will try not to list it. Try using Anandtech's LCD thread to find out panel types before you buy. -
Another good source, though lacking and slow with some brands, is flatpanels.dk. You can search for brand, for model, for panel type, response time, and all sorts of things.

HP's W2207H.
A pretty Sexy LCD with HDMI port.
And the base is just pure win. -
Having used an Acer, BenQ, Dell, and Samsung 22", I'd have to rate the Samsung 226BW as the best overall. The only drawbacks I've heard are luck and lack of a height adjustable stand like the 225. I got an S panel and it's amazing; however, there is a chance you can get another type of panel. The Samsung seems to be a bit pricier than a few months ago but in my opinion worth it since you can always use your LCD for your next desktop. Ranking the rest, Dell comes next, close to the BenQ, and finally the Acer - which I feel people can clearly see if placed side by side. Try going to Best Buy or another place and take a look at the screens, the specs don't mean much in real life. Research what features you require online before going!
