I've only had experience with the Scorpio Black 750 GB, excellent drive, quiet and doesn't run that hot.

My Toshiba used a WD Scorpio Blue and my Thinkpad came with a Seagate Momentus (now used as an external drive), and both work great. I hear Samsung is good too, so it's really up to what's on sale.

new samsung 1tb 9.5mm is real nice too.... and also cheaper than new wd blue...
    well rated by newegg customers...
though WD is nice brand but do not forget that their old 12.5mm 1tb hard drive was not that reliable....
so weigh your options before purchase i would say..... do not just go by brand name.....

Again, I went ahead and ordered the new WD 1TB Scorpio Blue but after the Storagereview.com review I'm wondering if perhaps I should have gone with the 750GB Scorpio Black.

My main drive is an Intel 510 SSD and the second drive would be used for data, pictures, videos, and games (mostly Steam based). I'm wondering if the 750GB Black would have been a better choice. Is there that much of a performance difference between the 1TB Blue and 750GB Black? For gaming would I have been better off with the Black?

Why not install games on the SSD? For data, there isn't a difference though.

As a data drive it doesn't make that much difference. File copies will be equally fast.

Game level loading will be slightly faster on the Black but again not that much difference in general.

im having a similar dilemma, except i'm trying to choose between the 1tb blue and the 750 black.

or should i wait for a 1tb black..... anyone know if one is in the pipeline for the near future? it will be used as a data drive in conjunction with my 80gb msata intel 310.

I was basically deciding between the 750GB Black and the 1TB Blue. My main drive is the Intel 510 SSD and whichever mechanical I picked up would be my data/games/video/pictures drive.

I chose the 1TB Blue but began to second guess myself, wondering if the speed of the Black would have been a better performer. The answer is yes, it would, but not by a tremendous amount. My main concern was gaming and the Black might load quicker but once levels are loaded, the speed difference is irrelevant. I decided to go with the Blue which is purported to be quieter and the extra 250GB is a pretty considerable size difference.

yea i'm leaning towards the samsung M8 now actually. since its cheaper than the blue and comes with a 5 year warranty vs 3 year.

the thing is, now that samsung has been bought over by seagate, who is going to honor the warranty? i dont want to buy it and then get burned because in a couple of years time there is no support for samsung drives

Tough call. No idea what will happen with the warranty. I paid a few bucks more for the WD but I think it was worth it for peace of mind. WD isn't going anywhere and in 3 years time I'm sure storage technology will have advanced enough (2TB 10,000RPM notebook drive?) that I'll want a bigger and faster drive anyway.

yea but my plan was to upgrade to a 7200 rpm 1tb drive when they come out so i can use this 1tb 5400rpm drive as my external backup drive
