what is the best brand for RAM? I ordered the Gateway M680XL, it comes with 1 GB of Gateway DDR2 533Mhz ram. But I dont want gateway ram. I'm thinking of buying two sticks (1 GB each) for 2 GB in dual channel. The names i see a lot are Corsair, Crucial, OCZ, and Kingston. Which one should I buy? Price doesnt really matter.

Skip OCZ. For Notebooks Corair, crucial and kingston are equally good. Get the cheapest. If prices are almost the same, check if any of your options offeres faster timings (what is refered to as CL, or sometimes latency)

most of the time the brands don't matter...just that some brands are most expensive cuz of their brand name...gateway doesn't make their own ram...they put RAM in their machines elsewhere

I have never had any problems with Kingston.

They are usually on sale somewhere. I have a matched pair of 512 in mine now.

Personally, I like Patriot Signature Series RAM, or their Extreme Performance. I have a stick of Signature PC2700 512MB in my lapotop, haven't had a prob. Works fine....going on 9 months of usage now!

Care to explain why OCZ isn't good for notebook?

I mean their desktop ram are awesome, customer support is awesome, I mean what else is wrong with them? (I just bought 2x512MB OCZ PC3200 coming today)
