As the title says, which is the best USB 3.0 external portable hard drive nowadays? When I say best, I'm referring to performance and stability.

    TIA :)

Personally, I feel it is one you buy and then buy the case. Alot, if not most ExHDD are 5400RPM drives 'leftover'. I usually buy a 7200RPM drive, then a USB 3.0 wit one touch backup. A least, that is what I bought last. Here And here!!

But what I noticed with this techinque is that these hard drive-enclosure combination doesn't put the hdd to "idle" mode unlike those commercially (hdd-enclosure package) bought?

If money is not a restriction, Kingston Digital, Inc. HyperX Max 3.0 128 GB Flash Drive SHX100U3/128G.

Personally on external storage i prefer to build my own, i had good experiences with Eagle Tech ET-CS2MSU2-BK 2.5-Inch SATA to USB Portable HDD Enclosure (Mesh) + Hitachi 5k500B, its stays cool, i cant hear the drive unless im extremly close. USB3 enclosures are starting to come out, ill probably upgrade my enclosures once the eagletech gets revised to usb3.

This depends a lot on the drive and enclosure, in my case the same enclosure posted above goes into idle with the hitachi 5k500b on all my setups (desktop, 2 laptops, and couple of media streamers), but never goes into idle with Samsung 640GB HM641JI
