    Hey Guys -

Once I get my M11X, I'm going to need an external DVD Burner. I will be burning ALOT of DVD's, so I was wondering what you recommended.

    Here's the Canadian newegg website:
Newegg.ca - external usb dvd burner

I'd prefer something around 40-50$, however if there's a significant quality/speed, I may go a little higher. I had my eye on the high rated Asus one with the rebate.

i have the asus one as well... note: it requires 2 usb ports to power it fully (it'll turn on and open/close with just 1). it comes with a double-headed usb cord to power it but the heads are close so you'll have to use both of your side ports on the right (unless if you get a usb extender). the 2 right usb ports on my laptop have bummed out so i can't use the drive right now. also, idk if these drives are supposed to sound like they're about to break when in use but mine does with certain cd's (not sure why), but not all.

Hmm, do all external USB DVD Burners force the user to use two USB ports in order to burn? Two are usually mandatory for my mouse and 7.1 headphones and the M11X has 3 :p

I guess I could always purchase one of those USB Hubs ...hmm.

What happened to your USB sockets? They just died?

Many do but since you only need 5v you COULD use one of the usb power bricks for other devices - like iphone or blackberry or PDA's.

Im using the Dell branded one from LG and it usually does ok with single cord but did come with the twin style as mentioned above. A lot of this depends on the system used though.

If burning a LOT then why not just get an external drive that is A/C powered? Probably faster with a mean time between failures that offsets the costs slightly.

You may be thinking within the box by just considering USB DVD player/writer.

    Consider the LG BP06LU10 USB 2.0 Blu-ray read/writer.

I'm writing (and waiting...'M11xR1') for a HD AC3 movie to write to DVD and I'm having to lower the quality to get it on a 9GB DVD.

Should really be writing it to Blu-ray.

I'm currently using an LG USB 2.0 GP08LU10 which also has two USB cables, one of which is for power.

Just wrote a DVD via the non-powered USB port on an M11xR1 with no problems with the GP08LU10.

Good USB DVD read/writer, but no longer on the market.

The good thing with new tech using USB 2.0 is that within the next year or so, it'll be superseded by USB 3.0 and thus good prices on USB 2.0 models.
