I'm sure there a lot of intricacies to this question I know don't about but whatever.

I'm looking for a 7200 rpm hard drive thats low heat, and efficient.

I've been looking at the 320 gb scorpio Black Label by Western Digital. Any other suggestions?

Ok, Ive found a place online that sells a WD3200BEKT for $162. I'm just wondering now if I need the free-fall sensor they have on the other version?

    Found it HERE

Some say its good, some say its a marketing-move. But if the price difference isn't much, you can get the 3200BJKT.

All I'm asking is if the free-fall sensor is useful. I've heard people complain about them and turn them off.

Agreed. The upper two are the fastest while the last one offer most bang for the buck.

I've never heard that before. Are you sure you are not talking about the head parking that happens during operation?

Whether you should take a freefall sensor is a good question. Tom's hardware recommends it.

I personally would still like to see proven in real life that these things work. It should not be hard to show it. Still no one has done it.

For laptop internal HDDs, I would go with Hitachis for reliability and availability.

i gotta second this post.... while i haven't worked on a huge # of laptops, i can say i have never seen a hitachi laptop go bad within the warranty period and have only replaced 1 hitachi laptop HDD. I'll be the first to admit i'm no expert... but i do know a good manufacturer when i find one... and i'll stick with hitachi HDDs for as long as i have laptops!

I think the Hitachi and the WD perform better in games, while the Seagate performs better for editing stuff and has a slightly quicker OS load time.

    I have always owned Hitachi drives since 1999. I have owned 6G, 15G, 30G, 40G, 60G and 100GB, last two were a E7K100 and a 7K100 still running beautifully.
The 7K100 is slightly noisier than the 5K80 (40GIG).
I will be getting a new laptop this month with a 80G HDD, don't know the brand, but I also trust very much Hitachi HDD. Only the 15G failed one time under the warranty period. No worries.

Anyone have personnel experience with the Hitachi 7k320 and can comment on whether it is noisy or has vibrations? I've seen a few comments to this effect, but I'd like some more information.

From the Tech Report review, the Scorpio Black seems generally faster than the Seagate 7200.3, but has higher power consumption. Based on spec sheets, the Seagate should be quieter than Scorpio Black although Tech Report's review found the opposite.

I've had great experiences with Hitachi drives in the past, so I'm hoping that the 7k320 can combine the performance of the Scorpio Black with the power savings of the Seagate while still being quiet. Might be a false dream though.

I had the 7K320 installed in a Dell D630, sold the notebook, been 3 weeks, no complaints so far. :D
I didn't notice any vibrations, but the WD320BEKT idled at about 40 and the 7K320 at 45, that was the only difference. The 7K320, was faster in almost all benchies, so I guess it definitely had the edge in peformance. Not sure about battery life and all, never bothered checking it. Would advise you to go for a Retail Drive, since it will be covered under warranty, and the Black is a very good HDD as well. I would recommend the WD Black.
