    Hi there,

I'm currently looking to upgrade my notebook hard drive. I currently only have 80 gigs. I'm looking for at least 250 gigs, but more would be great. I think 7200 rpm would make me happy as well. I don't run off battery ever, so power consumption is not a problem.

I'm just wondering what the best bang-for-buck here would be.

    Any opinions are greatly appreciated!

Fastest are probably the ones with 500gb that go 7200rpm.

If you are looking for pure bang-for-the-buck, I would consider a 5,400RPM 500GB hard drive instead of a more expensive 500GB, 7,200RPM model. Of course, you can compromise and go with a lesser capacity 7,200RPM HDD, but with the way storage is these days, (and based on future needs), I would still lean towards a 5,400RPM HDD with max capacity than getting a slightly faster, but less capacity 7,200RPM HDD in order to fulfill budget requirements.

Fastest does not necessarily equate to "best bang for the buck", which is what the original poster is primarily concerned with.

Running a 5400rpm 320GB Western Digital - wonderful little thing.
Counting the days and dollars until I get a chance to upgrade to an X25-M 80GB, though.

    Best hard drives?
When speed is priority: WD3200BEKT or WD1600BEKT
When battery life is priority: MK5055GSX (lowest idle power consumption) Hitachi 5K500.b (lowest power consumption while playing video)
    When capacity is priority: WD5000BEVT.

The best mix of speed, power consumption, capacity and noise: WD5000BEVT

Agreed. The WD5000BEVT is an excellent all around hard drive.

One in my PS3, soon to be one in my laptop. Watch amazon. They recently had it for $89.99 shipped. I shoulda ordered 2...
    Now they're back to $101. :(
