I'm looking for the best portable hard drive for the price that works on usb. Preferrably 500 gb. I'm familiar with the western digital my passport products but I hear a lot of rumors and complaints about it failing, not getting enough power from laptops, etc.

I bought a Toshiba 320 GB drive, but they also have a 500 GB version. It works fine as long as you don't use the supplied usb cable, I've read that a lot of people had problem until using a different cable.

My laptop actually restarted to update with the drive plugged in and the drive was causing it to constantly reboot. has been great since switching cables.

You hear a lot of complaints because they sell a lot of drives.
