    RAM/HD
    CPU

GPU when its needed of course, but won't be for a while..

RAM/HD has the best price to performance ratio!

    Nope for all laptops.

RAM is very useful, if you upgrade it, it improves your speed, battery life and performance

HD improves your loading times and overall performance as well.

The CPU is more costly and improves the performance as well.

The GPU will only improve if you game or do graphic intense things and overall costly and not widely avaliable

A 5400RPM drive will give a big performance boost. A 7200RPM is eveb better if you can afford it cause they are expensive at the moment. The more memory the better.

Well the size of the HD is up to you. How much room do you need? What are you going to be using the machine for? You need to probably be more concerned about the HD speed. See the above post by zazonz. Not sure what speed the Dell that you are interested in has. If its 4200rpm then defenitly upgrade to a 5400rpm speed drive. Now the 5400rpm drives come in all size I'm sure. You would probably have a choice of 60gb - 80gb - 100gb but again the real concern is the rpm speed. The faster the better. Now I just ordered a Asus z70va and went with a kind of a small drive at least to me. But, I ordered the Hitachi Travelstar 60gb (size) with the 7200rpm (speed).

Dells base drives are 5400RPM. 5400RPM drives are a better value.

I just submitted a review for the Gateway 8510GZ. It offers easy access to the ram, HDD, miniPCI and most notably has a socketed CPU (upgradable) and a MXM/Axiom slot (upgradable video).

It only costs $1599 CDN - an awesome deal if you ask me.

RAM, DEFINITELY! I had 512mbx1 memory on my laptop, and I add another dimm for dual channel and I happy with my laptop every since(well.. most of the time).. I saw the memory usage using memturbo, and everytime I start my computer it always used up about 400mb! just for start up!! That explains why my computer so stupid sometimes.. it needs more brain!! :)

if you're using 400 megs just at startup, you might have other issues that need addressing...
take a look at your processes and also check to see what is set to launch automatically with Windows and when you sign on...
