I'm leaning toward the Western Digital My Passport Essential 320GB USB 2.0
    ( http://www.amazon.com/Western-Digit...table/dp/B0012GQZZU/ref=cm_lmf_tit_14_rsrsrs0)

or the SimpleTech - Signature Mini Ice 500GB External USB 2.0 Portable Hard Drive
    ( http://www.bestbuy.com/site/olspage...etech&lp=1&type=product&cp=1&id=1213046783239)

    or the Toshiba HDDR320E03X 320GB USB 2.0
    ( http://www.amazon.com/Toshiba-HDDR3..._m=ATVPDKIKX0DER&pf_rd_r=1XSNA1A3GBAG3HT8EB5N)

Which one is the best overall? Which one would be best for backing up music and photos?

    Thanks in advance.

I would go with the Passport(I own 3). The 320gb drive in that unit is one of the fastest and quietest drives in the industry. As far as the SimpleTech, yes you get more space, however, early reports show the drive in that unit has some performance issues. And lastly the Toshiba is ok, but I think you'll find the Passport more to your liking.

I own the Seagate FreeAgent 250GB USB External Hard Drive, and I love it. Small and sleek, comes with it's own USB cable, and 1 power cable that plugs into your wall. It also can backup all your information on your computer, and it comes with a 5 Year Limited Warranty.

I know it's not on your list, but I would strongly recommend considering it.

Thanks I'll look into the Seagate one. I didn't know they had portable ones.

    Any other thoughts?

The only thing the WD 320GB/5400rpm has going against it is it's power consumption. If you care about small gains in battery life (5-10 minutes) it may be better to opt for a different drive.
