Hello
Im looking for the best model laptop SATAII hard drive. I currently have a 160GB and want to update it to something alot larger with quality. Ive heard good things about the WD5000BEVT but want to know if there is something better![]()
I currently have a ST9160827AS with
Height 9.5mm (0.374 in)
Width 69.85mm (2.75 in)
Length 100.20mm (3.945 in)
I also perfer 5400 as it sucks less battery and my battery is ed up and already has very poor battery life.

this drive without a doubt
Newegg.com - Seagate Momentus XT ST95005620AS 500GB 7200 RPM 32MB Cache 2.5" SATA 3.0Gb/s with NCQ Solid State Hybrid Drive -Bare Drive
if you dont need free space and want performance, get an ssd.
ssd will be the best upgrade you can do with a computer for normal use -
If you have your mind made up on keeping to a 5400rpm drive then the WD Blue 500GB is about as good as it gets at present. I have three of them and they perform great. There is no other 5400rpm HD I could recommend that would be better. Edit: On second thought you might want to take a look at the WD Blue 640GB 5400rpm drive. I can't remember if it is on par performance wise with the WD 500GB, I think it is slightly less but I have no experience with this newer design.
If you were to step up to a 7200rpm drive the Hitachi 500GB 7k500 is a tried and true leader in performance with the Seagate Momentus XT 500GB Hybrid the new kid on the block and has great potential. I personally can't wait to see a review of the new WD 500GB 7200rpm black although it won't be as fast as the Seagate. -
Will I get a better battery life with this hybrid (SS/mechanical) drive?
If not, then only mechanical with be fine. -
It seems Momentus XT uses a bit more power than average.
The best 5400rpm drive is the 640GB Seagate. Fast, power efficient and quiet.

...though it doesn't have the just released SSD hybrid. I like the look of the Hitachi Travelstar 7K500 and am planning on getting this for my second HDD. -
What was the model number on that 640GB?

If you click on the link below the image you can read it in the review.

Newegg.com - Western Digital Scorpio Blue WD6400BEVT 640GB 5400 RPM 8MB Cache 2.5" SATA 3.0Gb/s Internal Notebook Hard Drive -Bare Drive
at 65$ Its a steal!!! ordered one myself after looking at reviews on the web -
How does this one fair against the ST9640320AS?
-
ST9640320AS: 91 euros
WD6400BEVT: 93 euros
Just stating prices for me. -
Seagate 640GB/5400 rpm is faster than WD 640GB/5400rpm, see Xbitlabs.com for a detailed review.
-
Cheaper and faster. Sounds intresting.
Will check that review ASAP. -
Its sad that Seagate lowered their 5 year to 2 year now.....I know it happened a few years back but just commenting.
-
i wouldn'ty get a 7200.4 series Seagate.. failure rate is very high.. personally for more reliability i would get a western digital or hitachi drive.
-
Ive had problems with some Seagates as well but they generally are cheaper and (before) had the 5 year warranty.
-
Well finally after well over a month, Im going to order the ST9640320AS.
I also noticed that the cache is only 8MB. Wow that is low...
Any last opinions, should speak now or forever hold their peace
Also, what do you do with HDDs that are broken and dont serve any purpose? -
^ good choice.
-
Thanks
And with that, ordering now
