What is the best performing brand of HDD for my laptop? I prefer something above 200gb. And if you can direct to a place to buy it that would be great. If there is anything new that is coming out, I can also wait as well.

Thanks for anyone's help. Specs of my laptop are in Sig.

i think the hitachi 7200 models perform best in the 2.5" size. but yome people claim they are quite loud. can´t back this up, since i have a seagate momentus.
the seagate comes very close to the hitachi.

but most of the 7200 models top out at 200 GB. maybe you should be looking for a high density 5400 rpm model. due to the high density they are coming close to the 7200 rpm drives.

When I first booted up my Acer laptop after I installed my new Hitachi 7k200 hard drive, I thought it was defective because it was so quiet... I have "no" idea what these other people are talking about!

I have since installed a Hitachi 7k100 on my work laptop (its a P4 machine), and after my friend used my laptop with the new Hitachi HD, she ordered the same HD for her lappy!

The difference is night and day. Go 7200RPM's. Dont settle for less. Heat hasnt been an issue; the performance payoff is huge.

Wow, I never hear mine! I can put it on defrag while downloading music, and have excel and powerpoint open and though the HD light is pretty active - not a peep out of it

When I put the old stock Western Digital HD in there (4200rpm) its very noisy. You can hear it writing/reading and it gets very hot.

    Hi.

my 100GB 7200 RPM Hitachi 2.5" runs at 50-55+ c when just virus scanning or defrag, I keep getting warnings from notebook hardware control.

    regards

    John.

Maybe there is something wrong with your cooling? Ive had my laptop on top of a blanket on my lap since I woke up! (7:40-ish)... my temp is 35c. I use PcWizard, Notebook hardware control and HDTune, Ive never seen it go past 42c

Seagate and Hitachi are my two favorite brands. You won't go wrong with current models from either one. The last drive I bought was a 7200RPM 120GB Hitachi 7K200 series drive and it's quiet. Prior to that I bought 80GB Seagate 5400.3's.

My old hitachi 5400rpm 160gb was about 45-55c temps which made the palm rest warm.

The WD Scorpio 5400rpm 250gb i have now runs at 38-42c. Very very cool and no clicking noise.

Not the best performing HDD but good information

Hmm it seems like it varies on the one i pick i guess. But anyone have any other information about the newer models i hear about the gen 4 models from one of the companies (WD,seagate, Hitachi) i forgot which one. At this time my 100gb 7200rpm makes noises once in a while...(slight clicking noises) but other than that it is pretty quiet when its not doing real HD intensive stuff.

Newegg certainly had the cheapest price for my Hitachi 7k200 (100gb). Even used 7k200's on ebay were more expensive than newegg!

Google is your friend: Google whatever hard drive you want, compare prices. Dont forget to check ebay, bestbuy, craigslist, etc..

Well it could be that the 5400s are quieter, consume less energy(more battery) and larger in size for the price? The only thing that the 7K200s have a bigger advantage on is access times, even transfer rates read and write are pretty much identical(or better in the 5400 drives). As far as access times goes, with proper partitioning and defragging, you can reduce this and would be unnoticeable. HD Tune results often rate the Hitachi at 14.7ms, whereas the WD Scorpio at 16.6, the difference of 1.9ms is minuscule.

Samsung usually aren't top for performance but are close behind. They put a bit more emphasis on quietness and low power (and hence cooler). See the Tom's Hardware charts.

I have a Hitachi and WD Scorpio and both run "completely" silent, similar transfer rates and both run at about 35-42 C. The WD cost me $90 with a 2.5" external enclosure. That was before Christmas...they have come way down now.

I usually prefer the Seagate...especially in my tower, but I have read some problems with the "1st generation" perpendicular write/record, etc.

There are 320 GB for $179 at BB. I usually buy from Newegg....great CS, no tax and free shipping.
