I have a SATA Blu ray drive 3.5" in my HTPC desktop.
I would like to remove that from my desktop and put it in a USB enclosure so I can use it on my laptop if needed.
Has anyone done this? Is performance of HD video good when using with USB?
Would BD playback software recognize it as a internal drive and be able to run movies from it?

I haven’t done it, but I don’t see why it shouldn't work. USB 2.0 bandwidth is 480Mbps, where as the maximum available Blu-ray read speed as of today is 8x (288Mbps), bandwidth is clearly not a problem.
Take a look at this eBay listing, it supports Blu-Ray, HD DVD, DVD and CD drives; So I guess any regular enclosure will work. -
I can't remember where but someone has done it from NBR. The only issue I would see with that is the software side, where I heard many people had issues playing blu ray on their pc due to their copy protections or something.
