Hello. I own an Asus z70va notebook. It has a modular optical bay which fits 12mm drives.

I'm interested in upgrading to a blu-ray optical drive. Would it be compatible? I don't care about the movies. All I want is a drive that can read and burn blu-ray data discs. I have burned BD-R discs on the bwu-100a (drive from my desktop), and I want to be able to read them with my notebook.

    Thanks.

Do you have a specific model of blue-ray drive in mind?

If the drive and connections fit I don't see it being a problem. You can even watch movies on it since output to internal LCD doesn't have to be HDCP compliant.

The only blu-ray optical drives I know of right now are UJ-215 and UJ-210 produced by Panasonic/Matsushita. My preference would be the tray-loading UJ-210. I doubt it would just slide into the bay without additional mounting, but I figured the drive would work. Just looking for knowledge from some higher-level expertise.

It's true: why wouldn't it? The bwu-100a worked in my outdated desktop (personally built in 2001).

Asus tech support rep. responded with "this notebook isn't compatible with blu-ray", but he's probably just going off some outdated list or pulldown menu (that only lists optical drives up to 2004 or '05).

    Thanks.
